@Gloria Fleming. Thank you for your story yesterday. It was perfect for the occasion. I’m sure it touched the hearts of those of the Orb who are burdened with that inconvenient organ.
As someone with crippling anxiety, you hold that perch, Sophie! When you find something that makes you feel safe and like you can actually unclench for 10 minutes you hold on to that thing!!
Don’t forget, today is the Betty White Challenge….send a contribution to your favorite animal welfare organization in honor of what would have been her 100th birthday. She was a great champion of all animals.
Yesterday was a tremendous memorial to Lupin. Today can be a day of great benefit to every animal who needs care and a good home. Let’s all hug our pets, friends’ pets, and smile at all pets you meet if you live somewhere where a walk in the great outdoors is possible today.
And, of course, today is a holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr…a great man and an inspiration to all who aspire to a fairer more peaceful world.
When the colony occupying my patio numbered around seven or eight, a newcomer showed up. Sort of a tuxedo pattern except that instead of black the darker parts were tabby-striped. He was around for several months before I realized that unlike all the others, I never saw him any higher than ground level. The rest would blithely climb onto the roof of the shed or the patio, but this one guy never even got up into the seat of any of the deck chairs.
Albert A. Cat does not climb. In his younger days he only went as high as the second level of his cat tower and never the tippy-top. These days, the daybed is as high as he will go.
To Deer Orchid: thank you so much for suggesting we have a wake for Lupin yesterday. It was a brilliant idea and very healing to be able to share our favorite memories of him with each other. I meant to post this yesterday. It’s my favorite YouTube of Georgia teaching us how to draw the boys and Lupin (and a cameo from Elvis) is quite the star! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2lsnavWDEIQ
I forgot to post this yesterday — too focused on all the reminiscences of Lupin — but here’s another drawing “exercise” from Georgia: https://www.ampkids.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/BCN_Lupin_cartooning-one-sheet2.pdf . It’s printable so you can share it with any young (or not all that young) BCN followers.
May I ask that everyone donate to their local rescues in honor of Betty White’s 100th birthday and in honor of our favorite bad boy getting his angel wings. #BettyWhiteChallenge #AngelBoyLupin.
My dad passed away January 6. I have been too busy traveling and taking care of family to comment or read other posts, but I like to think my dad, who was a tremendous cat lover, was there to welcome Lupin. Hug and love your cats and family while they are with you <3
Raven is enjoying the tippy-top of his cat tower right now – there are two perches of equal height. One of them is Diesel’s. The other one, no one usually uses…until right now. Cats!
Did not post about Lupin yesterday because it was still too sad. It will take some time to gain the distance that gives perspective. The frail nature of life and the long meandering tale of grief have been demonstrated to me with unpleasant frequency recently. Revel and cherish what you have because it is always gone too soon.
Of course if there is only a tippy-top it’s not really about feeling safe and about not letting Tommy up there. If there’s a lower ledge or tube someone can climb in, then they should be able to share (not that Sophie want’s to share)
If you’re looking for a place to donate to, Charles River Alleycats is run by Tommy’s Woman. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.charlesriveralleycats.org/&ved=2ahUKEwiU5vuTgLr1AhXnA2MBHdkkBnEQFnoECAsQAQ&sqi=2&usg=AOvVaw1Xu6uJCy0tKCA8z8Ys4ma5
Lupin visited us today — I cannot find the specific pen that always sits in my pen caddy. I’ve looked all over the table, under the laptop, crawled under the table, looked in the bin under there, checked the edges of the entire room; nothing.
Either that, or the Robber Mouse Ladies have stolen it in his honor…

This seems like it will be an amicable negotiation, as long as Tommy and Sophie listen to each other.
deadheadzan about 3 years ago
Sophie will take the tippy _top and Tommy will take whatever is left.
marilynnbyerly about 3 years ago
Well, the good news is with Tommy’s weight being more than Sophie’s, he’ll keep the tower stable for her.

I still love how Tommy says everything with a smile, no matter the situation. I feel happier just looking at him!

Goldie & Lupin could learn a lot about communication style by paying attention to how Sophie & Tommy are negotiating!

This is an excellent negotiation.

Hmm, could Tommy and Sophie’s woman set up a small fan to blow wind through their fur?

Excellently negotiated conclusion to their problem.

Friendship! Such a sweet moment of learning to cohabitate. Although if the wind is in Sophie’s fur, their human might want to check on that.

Tommy is big enough that his nervousness about the “tippy” top is quite reasonable.

Sophie in that third panel is magnificent – with the wind blowing in her fur! Background music? I can hear “Born free, as free as the wind blows…”

Who’s peekin’ out from top of her tower
Calling a name that’s lighter than air
Who’s looking down to ’splain things to Tommy
Everyone knows it’s Sophie

My first serious artwork was a pencil drawing of my tabby, Beta, sitting high in a tree “Avoiding an Ordinary Life”. It’s been my lifelong motto.

If you’re looking for a place to donate in honor of Betty White’s birthday, consider Purrfect Pals (purrfectpals.org), which saved Puck & Lupin.

A marriage (or should I say agreement) made in heaven… She must have the tippy top but he becomes nervous on the tippy top.
