I’m the guy that says forget the low fuel light. That thing’s a cry baby. It’s the distance to empty one I watch but that’s not when I decide to refill. When the DTE says zero miles left, I really have another 60 miles before DTP, distance to push. You’ll want to get gas before then or it becomes very inconvenient.
I can remember waiting till the tank got down to a quarter of a tank before getting a refill, but an eighth, that is really pushing it, in my book. And I certainly wouldn’t just burn off gasoline till the warning light came on, that is assuming I had a warning light, which my old Dodge Dakota doesn’t. I do remember getting to a warning light in my EV once, but never again. Practically the whole dashboard lights up in red flashing, Why, it’s enough to trigger a heart attack. I guess the rule is: thou shalt not tempt thy EV range.
At the current price of gas, I can understand why he wants to get his maximum value for his rewards. However, he should have factored in other small errands also instead of driving around. Still, he will get at least $7.00 back and that’s not bad…..
Best way to save is to make sure to fill up at about a quarter of a tank. Or in my case, after going to work for the week and whatever run around I need to do. Most of the time it’s between the half and 1/4 mark. On average, about 9 – 11 gallons.
I get nervous when the needle moves left from the half mark, so I couldn’t do what Brutus is doing. My husband on the other hand, said that, even when on Empty, there’s always a gallon or two left. It’s what caused us to run out of gas in the sweltering heat one time. Needless to say, he changed his tune from then on.
I hope he belongs to AAA or some other service, otherwise it’ll cost him more to get towed to the gas station when he runs out of gas and finds himself stranded.
This has nothing to do with cars or gas, but years ago my mother would have me and my brother take the laundry to the laundromat in a cart to be washed, and would keep something wet out that had to be added at the last minute before we left so it wouldn’t get the rest of the clothes wet and cost more….(it was charged by the pound to wash) and she felt so smart for doing that! It would have made sense if she spread it out to dry a bit, but she left it in a wet lump, waiting for us to go!!
Does anyone remember when you got Top Value or S &H green stamps when buying gas? I remember working at a full service station and we gave away drinking glasses with a fill up, usually a 10 gallon minimum.

The oil price increase has just eaten up his 50 cent per gallon discount.

Makes as much sense as that fourth pair of black shoes she had to get

Makes as much sense as when a stores rewards offers you great savings, but you have to spend a lot of money on stuff you don’t need to, um save money?

Obviously he doesn’t live in a hot climate – running just above empty is a great way to get a vapor lock.

My grocery store gives three cents off per gallon of gas for every fifty dollars spent at the store.

Brutus is starting to think like a woma – never mind. Spock’s brain would short circuit over that statement.

um… not if you have to spend more of the fuel you just lost just to get there twice.

Ah, I remember the olden days when I would drive around to clear my head. Heady days, those low gas prices.

With Brutus’ luck the discount will expire while he’s driving around.

At Kroger you would have to buy over $500.00 in groceries to save .50 a gallon.

My BIL, a master mechanic, says to never let the tank get less than about 1/4. Gas cools the pump and below that can cause damage to it.
