Funny enough, I had a gum I hadn’t had in a while, and while I was trying to discover if I liked it or not, my husband kissed me. “Well, that is a new taste babe. Kinda liked it.”

The joke works because “taste” can refer to the sensation (perception) one experiences from the sense, or to have a property that can be detected through the sense of taste.

Earl implied the 2nd by mistakenly saying “good” instead of “well”.

It’s similar with “smell” and “feel”. Samuel Johnson regarded a statement like “He smells” as ambiguous, and he wanted to end the ambiguity. A young woman sitting near him on a hot day said to him “You smell!” He replied, “Miss, that is not correct. You smell. I stink.”

First kind thing I’ve heard her say in a hundred strips.
