“In order to survive, you must fight as if you were already dead.”
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” – F. Herbert, Dune
“Only those are fit to live who do not fear to die; and none are fit to die who have shrunk from the joy of life and the duty of life. Both life and death are parts of the same Great Adventure.” – Theodore Roosevelt

After years on the treadmill, I and most teachers just saw holiday breaks – there were way too many of them, which broke up continuity of teaching plans – as just another day off. Or there was a called staff meeting by some pundit, who would blather on about educational philosophies, none of which applied in the classroom. They were seen as the Oh That again, and not I forgot that was tomorrow.
I give thanks to all who made the supreme sacrifice so the U.S. may continue existing. Every time I think of men of courage, I can’t help but think of the Marines who fought island to island during WWII in what historians describe as meat grinders, what was going through their minds before the battles.
I get the thinking here. Where I work, once the MLK federal holiday passes then it is the long haul until Memorial Day weekend. I always perceive it as being such a loooong time from MLK to Memorial Day but then, before I know it, it’s here.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
The key is to be prepared for all possibilities while continuing to strive to fully support the Mission of the Team while depending on a combination of skills and pure luck.

What’s the surprise? They’re doing what they do every weekend. It’s not like they forgot and went to school today.

Ken Burns’ series on the Civil War had a letter from a Union soldier that ended with “Tomorrow — I am killed.”
