From the moment I could read, it was a treat, not a chore. Of course I didn’t have to make reports about my reading except about 5 or 6 per year: Something like 2% of my reading at Caulfield’s age. Closer to 5% by the time I was in high school.
When I was his age, my summer reading consisted of the entire Wizard of Oz book series. I could do one book per day. When those ran out, I turned to the Poppy Ott and Jerry Todd series.
When the temps reach the ‘kill’ level, I read. I found that if I do nothing else except meals, I can knock off a typical modern novel in less than a day. The older novelists – C.S. Forester, Nevil Shute, Pearl S. Buck, Sabatini, Orczy, and the classics et al take longer, but for those I read every word. The difference is writing quality and subject matter.
I fell on a hike a few days ago and it took me over 4 hours to go 2 miles back down the trail with a burning throbbing foot. Lucky I could put weight on it, the bruising is quite colorful!

To catch up, he would need to read ¾ of a chapter. How do you do that?

With earbuds and an e-book app on your phone, you can walk and “read” at the same time. They should pursue their hobbies together!

My goal is to read a book per week
Problem is that I usually only average around 500 pages a week and all the books I read are longer than that, some much longer
My realistic goal is 3 per month

If you have a summer job that pays by the hour, you do the math without thinking about it.

I’m enjoying this story arch but personally I listen to audio books while walking. Just make sure you can still hear what is going on all around.

At 1 chapter = 1 mile, he’s ahead, and the math is easier.

Given her heft, she probably burns about 100 calories a mile. Any bets that whatever she has in that mug thingie contains more than 525 calories?

About 1 step per word, or 1 word per step.

Now let’s look at this, Caulfield is doing more work. They should have made it equal parts 1 mile equals one chapter

Ugh, he said the “M” word.

He should read BATTLEFIED EARTH. The chapters are often as short as a few pages, some even shorter.
