I had a cat who gave me that look until I put down four different kinds of cat food. He looked at the other cats, said, “I told you I could make him do it.” and walked off – “saving it for later”.
Having had 3 beagles so far, I get that look constantly. My child even learned to use it. It does not work on me. Dog meals here are on a fixed schedule. On a rare occasion she does get hungry a little earlier or even later and might sometimes need a little extra treat. I don’t eat exactly the same amounts every day – my nutritional needs change with longer walks or whatever – so I assume her needs can vary a little, too. But she has to convince me it’s not a con. Her hospital work can make her hungrier as we walk miles going all over the hospital, so I generally take a few treats along for that. I was going to say my dog, not my child, but my adult child does also work in a hospital.
I have deer in my wooded back yard that will come up close to the house and stare at me in the kitchen window until I go out and give them some deer corn. 1 doe with a fawn, 1 doe with 2 fawns, and an older doe with a yearling doe and yearling spike buck (I call him bucky and he does not go far away while I put out the piles of deer corn for them to eat. Some times some show up in the evening too.
There’s nothing sadder than my best friend looking at me that way … until the sick and dying part, that is. ’Just cannot go through that anymore. Maybe GMO will match their lifespans to humans, or better yet, Harriet the tortoise.

You’d think Earl would have learned a few tricks in all the years they’ve been married.

The advantages of not having opposable thumbs. People bring you food instead of you having to go get it yourself.
