The older girls at one high school found it necessary to re-apply their lipstick during the day. After lunch, for instance, they would use the Ladies Room to do so, and kiss the large mirror there to test the result. By the end of every day the mirror was covered with lip marks. It had become a fun tradition.
The woman principal disliked this practice, and decided to stop it. She gathered a group of girls in front of the besmeared mirror to point out how inconsiderate it was to the janitor, who every night had to scrub the mirror clean of lipstick.
She called the elderly (male) janitor into the room to show the girls what an effort it was for him to clean the mirror. The janitor shrugged, and took a toilet brush from his cleaning tools, dipped into a toilet, and ran it over the mirror.
A poem from Fifth Grade years (circa 1953): I love myself, I think I’m grand. I go to the movies and hold my hand. I put my arm around my waist, and when I get fresh, I slap my face!
“See the pretty girl in that mirror there? / Who can that attractive girl be? / Such a pretty face / Such a pretty dress / Such a pretty smile / Such a pretty me!” I Feel Pretty from West Side Story: music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, play by Arthur Laurents (1956).
As she practiced for her first kiss, she noticed she could see the inside of her nose and was delighted to find a way to show off what she felt was her best feature.

Kissing the mirror was just like kissing the count: cold, unyielding and never showing anything that was not a reflection of her.

Her hair is done to perfection,
She likes what’s seen in reflection,
Her make up is right,
Her dress, skin tight,
If she were male, she’d have an erection.

So much for that tradition!

/// Through the looking glass, once, as a child
Alice ventured; the outcome was wild.
In her pretty pink dress
she recalls playing chess
and becoming a Queen. Alice smiled.
/// Tinted halfway between Red and White,
she’d accepted the aid of a Knight.
Reached the end of the board
both acclaimed and adored.
Now she kisses herself in delight.
