Magellan’s expedition was significant as it was the first successful voyage to circumnavigate the Earth, proving that the planet was round. This voyage also established the route that would later be known as the Strait of Magellan and opened up trade between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Additionally, the voyage expanded European knowledge of the world and paved the way for future explorations and colonizations. It also marked the beginning of the Age of Exploration and set the stage for the global domination of European powers.
Magellan was sponsored by Spain to travel west across the Atlantic in search of the East Indies. In doing so, his expedition became the first from Europe to cross the Pacific Ocean and circumnavigate the world.
Too bad it wasn’t asking for a summary of the Panama Canal’s beginning: “A man, a plan, a canal… Panama!” That’s the longest palindrome I know.
While getting an education is definitely important, I honestly can’t blame Calvin for feeling so frustatrated in school all the time, since half the stuff Miss Wormwood tries teaching to Calvin and his classmates is way too advanced for 1st-graders (kids who, at least in America, are usually only around 6 to 7-years-old).
Nobody ever prays for the clarity of mind to figure out the appropriate response to the presenting dilemma. Instead, they present God with a shopping list.
Magellan was killed in the Philippines. His navigator, Diego Garcia, continued the trip. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because there is an atoll that bears his name in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
It is part of British Indian Ocean Territories (BIOT). The United States Navy has a base there: part of “payment” for lend-lease in World War II. The island gained notoriety during the Gulf Wars.
I know this because I spent a year there one month.
need a hacksaw to get through the bars that automatically dropped when you tried to get away through the windows or doors. WHAT – your school didn’t have bars? wow, my school WAS really special after all.
Still trying to learn stuff, I checked out Magellan. I had thought he was Spanish but he was Portuguese. I could have guessed close to the pronunciation in Castilian Spanish, but not Portuguese. I googled “pronounce Magellan portuguese”
Apparently it is spelled Fernão Magalhães and pronounced something like Fer’now ma-geh-yash. I feel downright pathetic.

“The significance of Magellan’s expedition was such that it was seen as appropriate to include it on this quiz.”

Why panic? Couldn’t Calvin’s imagination send him on an imaginary voyage with Hobbes, charting those deadly waters?
KEA about 2 years ago
Thoughts and prayers are going to do Calvin about as much good as they do anyone else.

Ferdinand Magellan proved you can do everything wrong, and get killed in the process, and still become famous.

You pray for those three things pretty much every school day, Calvin.

What kind of school is Calvin attending anyway. When I was his age, we were still trying to learn our ABC’s and 123’s.
