After New Year’s Day, my wife urges me to take it down because of the falling needles, and the train-round-the-tree, which has begun to spread across the living room.
My tree this year was a small live one in the front yard. Coupled with a battery powered string of lights and a silver garland, my small set of lights was the only color on the block.
I’ve decided my Christmas (fake) tree is going to stay up year-round. Only the ornaments will change. I sort of like the little forest in the living room
My father worked as an insurance claims adjuster and had firm rules about out Christmas tree. It only went up two days before the 25th and was taken down on New Years Eve afternoon before the party in the evening. This was because he had seen too many claims for damages in house fires caused by dry trees bursting into flame, lit by an ember from a cigarette. Real trees of course.
Right before New Year’s, I ended up with two fractured toes, so our Christmas tree is going to have to stay up a lot longer than usual. It doesn’t bother me, though, because I kind of like how festive it makes our living room look.
I recently read that Queen Elizabeth used to wait until after 6 February to take Christmas things down as she loved Christmas and the sixth was the anniversary of her father’s death.

January 6 is my limit (Feast of the Epiphany, or when the Wise Men visited Jesus).

At first I thought they were trying to remember their wedding anniversary.

The date seems quite a bit late to me – but as long as that is what works for the two of them, as long as they’re both good with it – it’s fine.

The way we do it is: The tree and decorations go up the first weekend of December and get taken down the first weekend of January.

I wonder who takes their tree down first: Wiz and Blanch or Jon from the Garfield comic strip.

Why such a hurry? We just left ours alive in the front yard. It took more and more lights to light it every year but was nice.
