I kind of remember pulling legs off flies when I was a kid. We didn’t test them scientifically, but since insects have six legs, I think they might be able to function okay with just four. They’ve got a pair to spare.
We missed out on a basic principle of cartoon physics. After falling into a frozen lake, whatever fell in should come floating to the surface in a perfect ice cube.

The only thing worse than an angry dinosaur is a wet angry dinosaur in winter.

This reminds me of the arachnoid aliens in A Deepness in the Sky.
After their long hibernation (their planet’s orbit is very eccentric) some awaken to a damaged limb two, or other health issues.

I bet they didn’t figure out how they were going to get their prey out of the water, either. (Among other problems.)

I heard that the Chinese “weather balloon” is under 47 feet of water. That’s so shallow, we could ask for volunteers from the NBA to recover it.

Don’t you hate it when dinner is wading, and then ends up getting cold?

Maybe not a shallow lake, but a bit too close to shore is the hole, I think.
