On Sunday, someone asked where Hobbes was and someone replied that Hobbes may be in bed with Calvin but under the sheets. I then replied that we usually see Hobbes’s head on the pillow and sometimes he is snoring. Today’s strip is another example of Hobbes snoring. He has two speech balloons today. One shows him snoring and the other shows he is making a sarcastic imitation of laughter at Calvin’s comment.
Watterson has explained that this marvellous strip shows how different people see reality – “Calvin sees Hobbes one way and everyone else sees Hobbes another way.” This is well illustrated in today’s strip with Calvin seeing a large animal draped over a chair which is obviously based on Watterson’s cats. Any character other than Calvin would see a stuffed tiger doll on the chair – and would be unable to hear the doll snoring as dolls do not snore.
Our cat is definitely solid when he thumps down stairs and turns to liquid in much the Hobbes does in this episode, but when any man in work boots comes to the door that cat becomes the wind.
For a while there, we were pretty sure our son was boneless during his teens. I asked his doctor if he’d do a quick x-ray just to check. My son was not amused, but his doctor and I sure were. :)
The feline amorphous phase is a scientific fact. Cats of all species are able to take the shape of any given container. It’s the origin of the expression, “If it fits I sits.”
This reminds of a very short-lived character in ‘Peanuts’, Frieda’s cat Faron. He was mainly shown draped over her hand, and he seemed like liquid. Snoopy even remarked about Faron: ‘They deboned a cat!’

you’re going to be a liquid, Calvin, once Hobbes spills your bodily fluids for mocking him

All cats are liquids. It’s the only explanation as to how they fit into some of the places they fall asleep in.
