There was a science fiction story “The Man Who Sold the Moon” by Robert Heinlein in 1950. It was about a rich businessman who raised money for his space program by having competing businesses bid on NOT having him despoil the moon with advertising.
I recall reading a short science fiction story (Howard Fast, perhaps?), where a very large soda pop manufacturer attempted to install some form of advertisement (DRINK COLA-COLA) in low earth orbit, but unfortunately the name was incorrectly spelled, leading the company president to have a stroke… (I think.)
