The last place Canada would learn about “good forest management” would be the United States (at least from the government).

HMMMM… if 80% of America was natural forest, do ya think the USA would have spent the money to cover such a vast area with “better forest management”… Canada has nowhere near the budget to be able to really “manage” such an extended area. Then again, probably nobody does. The “management” should have been done on a planetary level 30 years ago!

Trudeau has assured us it is not Canada’s (and especially not his) fault. It the fault of mankind’s selfish actions. We need to dispatch John Kerry immediately (in his private jet) to fix the problem.

Like most humans something isn’t “real” until it impacts them. Although this particular event cannot be directly correlated to climate change, decades of predictions stating the Earth’s warming will lead to an increase in the number and intensity of such events. If the predictive models are correct, this is just the beginning. Buckle up; it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

“Multiple studies have found that climate change has already led to an increase in wildfire season length, wildfire frequency, and burned area. The wildfire season has lengthened in many areas due to factors including warmer springs, longer summer dry seasons, and drier soils and vegetation.” __ US EPA

Has anybody considered this might be a deliberate act by Canada in light of their ongoing inability to make it too the Stanley Cup finals? Do you think they’ve decided to just let the world burn since its all gone so wrong?

Send kerry up there to teach them a lesson on climate. Never mind cutting and cleaning fire breaks to stop spreading of fires. That makes too much sense. Hug those trees while your house burns down and you breath smoke. The idiots have taken over. We’re pretty much done for.

Remember how republicans shilled for oil companies for decades? Republicans took money from oil companies and lied about climate change for decades, even though the oil companies had studies that showed their product would change the environment. Republicans still resist solar and wind power. Now that the climate is changing republicans deny their hand in the process.

We may need to send that book to our own forest service, too. The Smokey the Bear campaign has pushed the putting out of all fires, no matter the size. Small fires can cut back the forest’s understory and reduce fuel for the really big fires. There are those of us tree farmers that do prescribed fires just to cut back the understory of trigs, small trees and weeds. This releases nutrients in the soil and reduces the damage caused by large fires. I believe this is now a practice of the US Forest Service.

The level of ignorance here is staggering. Canada is the second largest country by landmass with a population the size of California. Half of it is covered with forest – around 700 million acres. Most of the population lives within 100 miles of the US border. Most of Canada is uninhabited wilderness.

But by all means, tell them to rake their forests.

Extreme temperatures and drought conditions caused what was reportedly Canada’s most destructive wildfire season in history. While the aircraft was indeed throwing flames at the treetops, this does not mean it started the wildfires. The helicopter was carrying out what is known as a “planned ignition,” a technique intended to control the spread of the flames… Planned ignition is when we are going to put fire on the landscape. So we use planned ignition so that our firefighters can have one foot in the black. […] That makes firefighters feel safe because they know that a fire can’t re-burn. […] We don’t just walk out and start putting fire on the ground. There’s a plan that’s put in place by an ignition specialist. They go out, look at the area well beforehand, evaluate the fuels, the weather, they put fire sciences behind it, they put in a lot of contingency plans, work off of guards or natural features such as lakes or rivers so that it’s a safe line for the firefighters to be at when we’re doing these ignitions. They are done either by hand ignitions by crews on the ground as supervised by an ignition specialist or they’re done by the ignition specialist from the air using aerial operations.

But what actually caused the Canadian wildfires? Canada’s warm and dry conditions generated conditions that essentially make the vegetation act as kindling for fires. Such weather also breeds more lightning which during normal seasons causes around half of Canada’s wildfires. The remaining wildfires were caused by humans through a range of ways from discarded cigarette butts to sparks from passing trains. Officials in the province of Alberta said they are still trying to determine the exact causes of the wildfires, while lightning appears to have been the main cause in Quebec. – Snopes

Mike really doesn’t know how things work in the big wide real world. Climate changing, making longer hotter drier seasons, creates the environment needed for large wildfires. Canada has huge wilderness areas, due to much of the country being really, really cold and snowy in the winter, and very short summers. It’s not mismanagement, it’s climate changes.

As, I said in another thread. It’s been dry long enough here, there will be plenty of roadside fires due to careless smokers throwing their still burning cigarette butts out the window of their vehicles.

This does tell us the the Greenies’ belief in leaving forests to accumulate dead wood and other flammables is not a good idea. We need a new CCC perhaps as a form of obligatory national service after high school where you police the forests rather than serve in the military or Peace Corps.

A large part of the problem is the well intended fire suppression policies of most of the last century. It wasn’t until the late ’80’s that controlled burns were used to make up for not letting naturally occurring cyclical fires run their course.
