And making something illegal stops it? In history classes I sometimes have students read ancient law codes. Sometimes a student will enthuse about an ancient society, “They didn’t have murder or theft! It was against the law!” I remind him/her they’re against the law here and now, doesn’t mean they don’t happen.
Real question, of course, is always how apprehension of crooks and their trials went down in ancient times. One or two actually had two tiers of laws, one for the rich and one for the poor. :/s Of course everyone, rich or poor, is equal in the eyes of the law here and now. :/s
I don’t really mind this practice. If I’m going to see ads, they might as well be for something I’m likely to want. The main problem is that, as others above have said, the algorithms don’t know when to stop.
I like the way it only bothers people who expressed an interest in being bothered by that particular one thing.
Stalkers have not necessarily been invited to stalk. I remember thinking in the movie Ghost in which Patrick Swayze’s character was basically a stalker before. He told how he wouldn’t leave his loved one alone.
There’s a coffee table that has been following me around the Internet for weeks. I just bought a coffee table. What are the odds I’m going to need another coffee table this century?

That’s capitalism for you. Anything to scam a buck out of the non-rich. Scamming the rich is illegal.

I have convinced the digital marketing stalkers that I am a young woman shopping for bikinis. It’s much more fun to be followed around by those ads.
