    /// To the “New World” Leiv Eiriksson sailed;

    reached America (and thus prevailed).

    In five hundred years Chris

    sailed from Spain hit-or-miss.

If Chris hoped to be first, he had failed.

Leiv Eriksson, whose father was Erik the Red

Might just as well have stayed home in bed.

Did he by accident sail off course?

An embarrassing thing for a man called Norse!

A few measly vines and lots of stony cold ground —

Not much incentive to long stick around.

It took an Italian man with Spanish backing

To provide what poor lame Leif was lacking:

Greed to seek out riches and plunders

And Old World diseases to reduce natives’ numbers..

These Vikings are not very cute/

But at sea they’re supremely astute:/

You can count on the Norse/

    To plot the right course:/

They’re just taking the scenic route.

Bjarni Herjólfsson ( pictured above ) was really the first to spot Vineland but Lief Erikson got the credit because his name was easy to pronounce and spell! Lucky Leaf, Poor Barney!

    Leiv Eirikson discovering America

    Paste (including the quote marks)

    "Category:1893 paintings in Norway" Wikimedia

(syntax supported by the Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, and Ecosia search engines) in the browser address bar (or search for it using one of those search engines) and choose the first Category: found and once there find the text string 4,594, and click its link for info and links that point to more info (perhaps best viewed using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, which can automatically translate most webpages if necessary) about this huge painting.

Again, a larger strip image is shown by (Ctrl- or right-) clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #3199 (October 6, 2023) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment, and using the dropdown menu (even larger, if you trim what’s after .png from the URL). I have added a comment there pointing to info about this artist I used to point to here. So far, 2 works by him have been used here, the January 8, 2018, strip being the prior.

Hi all! When I went to upload today’s comic, I got a message telling me the server was full. Not sure what the workaround is for that, but I plan to look into it in the morning. In the meantime, today’s installment is on the blog (), Facebook, and Twitter, if you want to take a look at it that way. I’ll try to get it on here ASAP. Thanks! Steve
