the current and older generation will never be comfortable “Asking pronouns” and shouldn’t have to ask. They should assume as humans have for millennium.
I would like to work to a world where we drop gender pronouns completely and ONLY say They Them and have gender not only not matter but also be no one’s business. In situations where what I just said is not possible , make changes or phase it out.
Honestly, I hadn’t even had a need to think about Maaaow’s gender up to now…probably because I keep referring to them as “that cat” instead. :p
A general comment on they/them pronouns: Personally, I dislike they/them for an individual. I am constantly thinking “This person and who else?” However, they/them has clearly won the battle for enby pronoun identification over the alternatives. Therefore, I (and everyone else) just need to adjust to the singular “they” and accept it.
As for grammatical correctness: English is constantly changing and is very adaptable. Consider the issue of splitting infinitives, which I did twice in this post. Did you notice? Did it upset you? Do you care? They/them is just another change.

I wouldn’t need to assume anyone’s gender if they didn’t make it hard to guess.

They/them is plural. For one being it makes less sense than…all the other nonsense.

Just default to “they/them” and they’ll make any corrections later. My kid appreciates it.

Funny thing is, none of the cats or dogs I’ve ever had have referred to themselves by “pronouns”….

Marigold, you are familiar with the pronoun “they” aren’t you? You don’t have to beat the poor cat’s name to death.

English has needed an unknown/indeterminate gender pronoun forever. Many other languages have them.

They/them is my default whenever I don’t know pronouns. It’s great for when I’m talking to internet randos.
