There is a great YouTube channel called Silent Comedy Watch Party. You can see some very rare films there, and one of my favorite comediennes, Gale Henry, did her own falls…exactly like the men. She was also the inspiration for Olive Oyl.
Keaton was a master who after he switched to a big studio (MGM) and MGM went to sound was little appreciated. He was actually a good actor with a good voice but MGM did not give him very good roles in the “talkies”. His best work comes from his independent days with United Artists in the mid 1920s and yes, to a certain extent he is a master of the silent days.
Charlie Chaplin proved in the “Greatest Dictator” that he could be a master of sound too! The scene where he walks on a plank with a bucket on his head talking is amazing, the calculations he must have done virtually blindfolded. Also he did some films in the UK after he was unfairly deported such as “Limelight” that showed his ability for Dramatic roles as well.

That kind of physical comedy used to be very popular. For instance, I loved The Three Stooges … when I was five.
However, once Jackie Chan elevated it to a fine and martial art, everyone else pales in comparison. :)

We’ve been rewatching old Seinfeld episodes and I still think Kramer was one of the best at physical comedy.
