One of the downsides of being an atheist is not being able to believe bad people are made to atone in an afterlife for the copious amount of horrible things they did in life.
The final reward for a lifetime of greed and ruining the lives of the working class by stealing their dreams so you and a bunch of greedy shareholders can have more money than they really need to live comfortably on. Stealing bread from your brother’s mouth just to keep it all for yourself is a moral test they all fail miserably,
I did well with my professional career. I could have done better, but I was unwilling to do those things that would have gained me the bigger promotion, better job title and more $$$.
“What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but loses his soul.”
I contend that there comes a point where you stop owning things and they start owning you where you no longer exercise power but are a slave to it, where it isn’t only a matter of keeping up with the Jones’ but keeping up with your own ego.
I do not have to rule the world; I just have to keep it from ruling me.
What are you willing to give up to keep your soul?
The coroner will have to put something on my death certificate, but it will not be a stress-related disease.
There was a guy who ran the board of our hospital and took it from being one of the best workplaces in the area to having aged equipment and the lowest wages in the area. When he left, he got a ‘golden parachute’. I have often stated that it should have been paid entirely in $#!* coin.
James 5:1-4 “Come now, you rich people, weep and wail for the miseries that are coming to you. Your riches have rotted, and your clothes are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you, and it will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure for the last days. Listen! The wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.” and Mark 10:25 "Jesus said, ‘It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’” and 1 Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.”
I like to think that happened to one particular guy who ran a chain of stores in New England that I once worked for. The company was in trouble, and Target offered to buy them out, taking the store locations and even staff. But this guy had a golden parachute that would only pay him if the company went under. So, he put the company out of business, making millions while the unemployed former workers had to fight in court for their wages and benefits.
