I attended an elementary school one of the teachers was a children’s author by the name of Virginia Ornsby (some of her works were "Under the Banyan Tree, the “Long Lonesome Train Whistle” and “Cunning is Better Than Strong”) during an assembly she told the her audience the only misspelling she’d overlook was “Little Bother”.
My older sister an I engaged in a conversation like that once. She tried pulling the same thing as Zoe, but I was so committed to annoying her, I still repeated it it. That really made her blow up.
There was a crackpot marriage therapist who taught that repeating everything your spouse said was the key to preventing arguments. Harville Hendrix, “Mirroring” he called it. Oprah believed him, of course she was never married.
The best way to handle this sort of thing is to totally ignore the pest and go about your business, Eventually, since they can’t get a rise out of you, the copycat will become bored and move on.

This is so common. I wonder why kids do that or even why it would occur to them to do the repeat thing. It’s a mystery.

My solution was to memorize a very long speech or monologue to the point that I could trot it out at a mile a minute.

I preferred Hobbes’ method, in which he found a book and recited a passage filled with extremely big and sometimes Latin words.
