I don’t fully agree but then I don’t fully disagree so why am I even wasting any space saying this question? Now that’s what we REALLY need to consider and contemplate and meditate upon.
April is a pretty nice month in FL. Pollen season is almost over and the temps are still mild. May starts the long, hot summer season which lasts until October.
Strange how the commentary went off on a tangent, completely ignoring the fact that the strip was about Eliot’s poem. Weird Margaret, as Jonathan Winters used to say.
What an impressive strip. Adult themes and comedy….with some thought provoking concepts. WWI in many ways completely destroyed Britain. The army mistakenly encouraged people to enlist and serve together. Entire small towns sent off every young man to serve together at the front. With horrific battles killing 40,000 allies in a day’s fighting….towns lost their entire future generation. The army took in regiments made of plumbers, mechanics, mine workers and led them to slaughter. The last effect, only aristocracy could be officers. Not enough of them, so 4th and 5th sons of Lords and Ladies were drafted to be officers. Imagine Bertie Wooster as your captain. Unexpectedly they proved compassionate men. You can find photos of the daily foot inspection by the officer (looking for problems that would prevent marching) the soldiers lying on their back, bare feet waving in the air, like small children. These new untrained officers saw them as children. These surviving officers returned home deeply committed to the welfare of their lesser brothers. Many served in the depleted legislature and formed the core of what became Socialist Britain.
I heard one time that Eliot gave a public reading of The Wasteland. When he finished, he received questions. Someone asked what the poem meant, so he read it again.

Yep. All the trees bloom and the Temps drop from the 70s to the mid to low 20s. I’ve got two peach trees that bloom every year. And they get frozen.

C’mon Arlo, you are in the South. ANY month can be the cruelest. Just depends on what you think is.

Only one of my 35 Mason bees emerged so far. The Hollywood plum is done blooming, so I guess there won’t be many plums this year.

Pretty clearly, April is cruel because it mixes memory and desire.

I don’t get the concept of a cruel month. What is cruel depends on your expectations, not a calendar.
