I thought the car pitched into the ravine head first.

And now the fun begins!

Elementary, my dear Watson!

Mom just had an “Ooooh” moment, like Sam with the bread on the stair in LOTR: ROTK.

This is where fear overcomes anger in mom world.

Calvin and Hobbes are hundreds of feet down the road!

Today’s strip is an unusual one in that Calvin and Hobbes do not appear. This is the third of Mom’s four appearances in this arc – which, as I keep mentioning, is one of my personal favourites.

First appearance by Mom was the strip where she was sitting with her back to the window and we saw the car go past behind her back and then Hobbes and Calvin running after it. As a reader commented, it was one of those few occasions when we see Hobbes as a living being when someone other than Calvin is in the strip. These strips only occur when the other character is looking away from Hobbes.

The second appearance by Mom in this arc was when she spoke to Calvin in one of last week’s strips. The final appearance will be when she catches up with Calvin and Hobbes and she sees Hobbes as the stuffed doll that she always sees him as. There will be a wonderfully heart warming end to this story. I remember a reader commenting five years ago, “Good ending. It’s brought tears to my eyes.”

Dam kids.

I wonder if Calvin’s still running, as well!?

Calvi had better hurry to the next state, or he won’t like the state he’ll be in.

Mom is UP!! Watch out!!

Meanwhile, our hero is ditching his responsibility…….

I’ve never been sure if that look on her face is fright or rage or both.

Calvin, the error is compounded by your running away.

Mom … slowly … connects the dots.

Mom, is looking for Calvin with a vengeance—until she finds him and ascertains that Calvin was responsible then she ‘looking to kill’ ! ! !

And the shoe drops…

Busted, Calvin!

This has been a VERY long morning.

We have a road nearby where I live that has a wicked goose neck curve in it. It’s aptly named “Elbow Road”. Every so often, we see signs of car that didn’t make it around the curves and became prey for the “ditch monster”.

And suddenly, Calvin’s irrational behavior from earlier makes sense.

Go Calvin, go!. Go Calvin, go! Calvin be good.

I love the Mom’s determined runs in the last panel as she pieces everything together.

Is she running because she is afraid the car or Calvin might be hurt? Her expression seems to imply the former and that Calvin is responsible.
