From Not Always Right: Dentists Are Expensive; Establish Good Habits Early!
My husband and I are going out for a date, so my in-laws are babysitting for us. When they get to our house I go over our two-year-old’s bedtime routine. I show them where we keep her toothbrush and flossers.
Father-In-Law: “You brush her teeth? Why? She’s only two.”
I don’t ever remember dreading the dentist. My Mother (born in 1915) was a wonderful woman who could have written much better books on raising children than that quack Dr. Spock! I am the 6th of 7 – She had a lot of practice!
“Repeat it back to me” is a very good tactic to make sure the kids listened. Speaking as a kid who had to repeat things back because otherwise whatever was said was gone forever.
I like going to the dentist. It’s relaxing. I get to lie back and let someone else worry about stuff for a while. Sure, I might find out I have a cavity and have to schedule a filling at the end of it, but that’s a problem for me-in-half-an-hour, not me-right-now. While I’m having my teeth cleaned, I can’t check email, answer the phone, or do anything else. It’s peace and quiet. :-)

I’m lucky to have had good dentists, but even with that, it’s still dang uncomfortable having someone dig around in there!

Talk about a way to ruin the day! I’m fine with the dentist now, but at Hammie’s age…uff da! It was a huge bummer.
