Uphill. Both ways. Backwards. On his hands. Doing his homework. Carrying his brothers.

And now if I walk three blocks in any direction, buying food is impossible. There is a convenience store a mile away, but the closest actual grocery store is 2.5 miles away.

Oh, the pain of physical strenuous exertion! Half of my neighbors also stop at the mailbox before continuing 50 feet to the garage to save walking an extra 50 feet. Most of them also can’t park inside because they have so much junk piled up inside.

When I grew up in the 60’s we had a corner market about every other block and a “spa” (coffee or soda counter) on the other block. They showed the “ethnicity” of the local community. Italian, Greek, Irish, Korean, Chinese, Egyptian, “Kosher”, etc… We also had a Piggly Wiggly for stuff the local markets didn’t carry.

When I went back 20 yrs later about 3 out of 4 were gone. Replaced by a Supermarket every mile or so.

PS I can’t write out fractions. Gocomics thinks it’s a URL, which isn’t allowed.

When I was sent 1.5 blocks for milk, Dad estimated that it was the same distance from the house to the barn on his folks’ farm.

And now you can’t earn a living wage doing honest work, so you have to deliver for Uber Eats to make ends meet by being a slave to the gig-economy—oh, wait, that’s the poor soul who brought the food to you.

When I was little (up to age of 5) we lived in Brooklyn. My entire life – other than when visiting my other grandparents by car – was in 3 blocks across and an one block up. Home, grandparents & uncle, great aunt / uncle, school, grocery store, fruit & vegetable man, bakery, kosher deli, fish store (ick), kosher butcher, and 3 “candy stores”. With googlemaps I can visit back there whenever I want – the stores have changed and my nursery school is gone, but it looks the same.
