When I was a baby my grandfather â my motherâs father â lived with us. He had cancer. He wanted more than anything to hear me say âMamaâ before he died. One day he was watching me while my mom took the older kids swimming at my grandmotherâs house. He called: âThereseâŚcome home quick!â I wasnât the healthiest baby so Mom thought something was wrong. She bundled the kids & raced home. He met her at the door with a brilliant smile: âSHE SAID âMAMAâ!â I was sitting on the floor pointing up at HIM, saying, âMama!â (He died one week before my first birthday. It was understood in the family that I was his favorite grandchild.)
I canât say I read from the beginning, but when I first read this strip, Zoe was a baby and the only child. Our local paper stopped carrying for a long time and the internet wasnât really a thing yet. When it finally came back a few years ago, Zoe is in school and has 2 siblings.
Zoeâs first word was Da-da, much to Wandaâs dismay. It took a long time to get her to say Ma-maâand at first she would only say it if her finger was up her nose!
There was a family whose little boy never spoke. The childâs doctor assured the parents that some children spoke at a later age than others, not to worry.
But he still never spoke,
One morning at breakfast when he was about two, he threw down his spoon and said âThis oatmeal is lousy!â
âSon!â exclaimed the boyâs mother. âYouâve never spoken before! Why now?â
âWell,â said the tot, âup to now everythingâs been fine.â

What, they had a wind -up clock in Wrenâs room?
My mother told me I used to hum before saying any words. That was the noise that our refrigerator made.

How would a not even one year old know about TikTok? Also, she grew all of her hairs and we had seen her say words years before TikTok was a thing.
