Rossums Universal Robots. 1920 I think. The first use of the word robot, and a play about robot revolution. The word itself derives from the Czech word “robota,” or forced labour, as done by serfs………
As I have mentioned before, when Bill Watterson stated for the first time that he does not see Hobbes as part of Calvin’s imagination – that was in 1989 but I did not read about it until 1992 and Watterson would state again that he does not see Hobbes as part of Calvin’s imagination in The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book in 1995 – he explained that he does not think Calvin would imagine someone who argues with him. He stated of Hobbes, “I think he is more real than any kid would make up.” Today’s strip illustrates this point very well. If Calvin DID imagine Hobbes, he would probably imagine Hobbes to be very respectful like the robot that he and Hobbes are trying to create.

Calvin does not lack confidence nor modesty as to who he thinks he is…or at least who he’d like to be!

He could end up inventing a robot like Marvin in “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.

Kind of like when everyone was getting PCs and many people programed them to say ‘what is thy bidding my master’ when starting up.
