My husband will drive to 2 states away for a James Bond convention or a quilt show – so cartoon trip does not seem too bad to me – and no $30 plus in tolls I am guessing.
This is why my eldest daughter has a picture of me with Colin Baker, the Sixth Doctor & his companion, Peri Brown, played by Nicola Bryant autographed by Mr. Baker to her.
My daughter & I are Monkees fans: she, since she was 3 & watched my DVDs with me; me, since the show first aired (I was about 2). Last summer we went to a convention & got to meet him & have our picture taken with him. It was huge for both of us. We also got to meet Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster); Sam Jones (Flash Gordon); and Cherie Curie (the Runaways, Foxes). Let me tell you…they were all super-sweet.
I went to a convention back in February. Several celebs were there meeting fans, taking pictures and signing autographs (among other things). I got autographed pictures but I’m not saying of whom.
Eons ago, when I actually went to cons, there were basically two kinds; Fancons and Commercialcons. Fancons were put on by the fans of the genre. The Commercial cons were put on by corporations to push their products. I tended to avoid Comercialcons. Now it’s pretty much of a muddle so I don’t go to cons anymore.
I’ve been going to SF cons since the early 80s. My first one was a mini-con with Jon Pertwee and Lis Sladen. It was so small, the dealers room was one guy, and there was only one auditorium showing the program. The autograph/photo meet and greet was outside under the trees. (Oh yes, and this was in the days before the stars charged for autographs and photos).
How big a deal going “all the way across the state” is depends on distance and traffic. If you have to drive all the way north to south through California (including LA), that is a very different experience than if you have to drive across Rhode Island.

Just think, it might worth something when your son has kids.

Careful, a certain alter ego might want to have a talk with this “Ranger Rory” character.

My son has a picture of himself with Stan Lee before he died. Guess it beats having a picture with him after he died.

Judging by what happens every time “Ranger Rory” is in the area, he will be on his way to the next convention just before the Gumbos arrive.
