William F. Buckley, Jr. was famous for sprinkling relatively obscure polysyllabic vocabulary words into his written commentaries. It was suggested that he used fancy words even when calling his dog, Phydeaux.
Fractious was written on the cage of a cat, at the animal shelter up for adoption. “Can’t Clean Litter Box Too Fractious” Guess he just wanted to play. First time he saw me I was outside the room his cage was up near the window. He was walking around tail swishing rubbing up against the cage, they say he’d never done that before. I brought him home a week later. He likes to be around what I’m doing a very smart cat. He does grab and mouth me, not hurting I’ve been accepted by him.
This reminds me of a scene from WKRP, found the full transcript googling the keywords. The station owner called Herb and Les addle minded and obtuse. They fight over the dictionary. Les finds obtuse in Websters, “exceeding ninety degrees but less than one-hundred eighty degrees; lacking sharpness or quickness of sensibility; rounded at the free end; dull”. And feels impressed he’s “rounded at the free end”.
My husband’s complaint used to be "if I can’t spell it, how can I find it in the dictionary?! Of course that was before Siri, or whatever. I still like the paper version myself.

Dropping a dumbbell on someone’s foot will make him fractious.

Recent newspaper article:
“A truck loaded with thousands of copies of Roget’s Thesaurus crashed yesterday, losing its entire load. Witnesses were stunned, startled, aghast, taken aback, stupefied, confused, shocked, rattled, paralyzed, dazed, bewildered, mixed up, surprised, awed, dumbfounded, nonplussed, flabbergasted, astounded, amazed, confounded, astonished, overwhelmed, horrified, numbed, speechless, and petrified.
“Meanwhile, those waiting for the shipment were at a loss for words.”PraiseofFolly 17 days ago

Are all the comics today trying to see who can use the most big words?

Eerie. Fractious is a word seldom heard, yet it’s also today’s “Word of the Day” at the Free Dictionary. Hmmm……

I knew someone like that. Ask them the following day the meaning of the word they used the previous day and they would have no idea.
