It used to be you dreaded the person writing a check now its the person who brings the eco friendly bags, that have to be packed just right, and are usually a bag or two short that brings the checkout line to a crawl.
I found a eco friendly bag from Menards in my garage, that was sitting on the workbench since COVID. Put some tools in it to haul into the crawlspace. It disintegrated.
Sadly, while every bit still helps (so don’t stop attempts to be eco-friendly just because other pollutants seem to off-set the gains at a glance), there is still truth to this—if the world is going to go truly eco-friendly, it kinda needs to do more than these small tip-toes towards the goal, done more in token than anything else by some.
As someone who uses eco-friendly bags though, I would urge the adoption of them, not just because they’re eco-friendly, but because I find them genuinely superior, on average being bigger and more sturdy than the plastic/paper store-provided bags.
I’ve got 3, 4×4 for hauling, van (property manager tool box) and little xTrail that no one is allowed to use as dumpster Boss-lady’s van looks like homeless person shopping cart
I didn’t think anyone still bagged groceries for you. Or used anything other than canvas bags. That’s all I see here. But then I do shop mostly at Aldi’s and Sav A Lot.
A few weeks ago I was following a car on the freeway and the smoke coming out of the tailpipe was blue, oil going through the cylinders and probably from more than one cylinder with the trail of smoke behind the car, where’s the state troopers when that happens?
Every little bit helps. Have had people tell me that the bio doggy poop bags I use wont bio degrade because in the land fill they aren’t in enough sun and air. Still better than plastics that won’t ever bio degrade they just become micro plastics are now being found everywhere.
Nobody seems to use reusable bags out here in the suburbs. I know that Whole Foods has to have a sign telling the customers not to use their canvas bag as a shopping bag, because then it would be too easy to walk out without paying, but my Safeway doesn’t have hand baskets any more. Everyone stole them. So if I only want a few things that are not enough for a cart, I use my canvas bags. None of the employees have said anything about it.
The old European favorites were (1) wicker baskets and (2) string bags that fold up small when empty. Still the best for odd-shaped things, especially unpackaged goods that you buy fresh each day or two.
California has finally figured out that replacing flimsy plastic shopping bags which degraded in sunlight in a few months with nearly-indestructible plastic, shopping bags was a really stupid idea. (Do YOU take potentially dirty plastic bags for reuse? Nobody does.) I don’t have to argue about cross contamination. Leaks escape your smaller bags.
All plastic shopping bags will be banned in 2026.
(If you do recycle those bags, good on you, but you are in a small minority.)

Go to the grocery store and fill your eco-friendly bag full of items packaged in plastic.
