According to Google: Ernest Hemingway was known to drink a variety of drinks, including daiquiris, martinis, and a potent absinthe and champagne cocktail he created called Death in the Afternoon.
Wonder if Mrs. Olsen is thinking of her first drink of the evening after school. Been know to happen to lots of other professions with less frustrating occupations.
For my fellow gin drinkers, may I suggest Hayman’s Old Tom gin? Not everywhere sells it, priced about the same as Tanqueray. For martini drinkers, look on YouTube for the kid making a martini in “Auntie Mame.”
Caufield didn’t mention that brewing coffee with a French press also uses pressure but also patience. In the third panel someone is using a Chemex coffeemaker with filter.

Hemingway also said that when you pay your money at the booth that collects highway money, a bell should ring.

Another reading assignment Olsen is regretting giving that kid.

He starts out with a non-sequitur and makes his presentation self-referential at the end, but it’s all undermined by simple practical responses. Nice.

Depending on the era, maybe Hemingway was drinking a Hemingway at El Floridita?

Good one; multiple punch lines.

I bought some Bailey’s last time for my afternoon coffee, I think eggnog that comes in a bottle is next.

Hemingway probably enjoyed a variety of potent potables, but I always think of him as drinking rum daiquiris.

How like Hemingway—brief and to the point. Kudos, Mrs. Olsen!
