Actually, I would consider the armor “improvement” a significant upgrade. Who would want to fight someone that you believed actually filled that armor?
A Draft horse is what he needs, they don’t come much bigger. Armor is heavy that’s why chain mail came along but it was the Huns who were smart, multiple layers of leather and silk underneath – it stops arrows from doing more damage. The Samurai too and I think they had armor over vital parts only.
