Anywhere you go you can find something there that, for lack of a better description, is going to be a character builder.

That’s the thing about the US, pretty much anywhere you live, you get screwed by the weather, earthquakes, or volcanoes (Hawaii). All you can really do is decide which is the least bad option for you and try to live there.

One thing about hurricanes is you have enough warning to plan your course of action.

How is everyone’s home owners insurance holding up? I expect to get cancelled in a couple of months, probably before my roof gets repaired. It took forever to get adjusters out and then get on a waiting list for repairs. They stressed us out when the lowest tree removal bid for the large oak laying across the roof was $20,000, (steep land) they said go ahead, then stalled and tried to deny payment. Allstate, but all of them are in a bind. We need insurance co-ops for different regions, imo.

Hurricane Helene was a devastating tropical cyclone that caused widespread catastrophic damage and numerous fatalities across the Southeastern United States in late September 2024. It was the strongest hurricane on record to strike the Big Bend region of Florida, the deadliest Atlantic hurricane since Maria in 2017, and the deadliest to strike the mainland U.S. since Katrina in 2005. Wikipedia

No comparison between the effects of an ice storm and a hurricane…. IMHO

Hurricanes. A couple of days/nights without power is more of an inconvenience than devastating destruction.

If a branch breaks under snow and ice it shouldn’t be in a place, where it can destroy your house or installations. You should be aware of the risk and cut it accordingly.

And moving to the coast won’t help when it may snow and freeze there, too. It just adds more severe storm conditions into the threat scenario. Maybe even flooding.

Flimsy pine trees. Those little live ones you buy at Xmas and then plant out back. Their best size is small.

I lived through an ice storm in Jimmy’s home state and when the thaw came there were no more standing power poles in town. All the roads were blocked but what had been our lovely interlocking oak trees. Even the heavy cross country towers were down like dominos. No power at home for 19 days. My office in town 23 days. Lineman more than earn their money.
