I love coming to the comments section and laughing at the people who struggle with the fact that different parts of the country and world do things differently than wherever the reader is. Yes, large parts of the U.S. start a week-long break on Presidents’ Day. No, it may not be that way where you live.
I’m not a parent myself, so probably actual parents have already figured this out, but what do the kids do at home all day if both parents are at work? Or if there’s only one parent to begin with? And can you really leave little toddlers at home alone? Probably not, but what then?
I’ve heard educational reasons for having year-round school, but family impact seems to me to make the more compelling case.
Caulfield would have been out anyway. He never seems to be ‘at rest.’ But this time, he just didn’t pay attention to the announcement about school closing. Either that, or his parents didn’t tell him so he wouldn’t be home pestering them all day.
Ok, I can maybe understand how Mrs. Olsen might forget and show up on a Monday because she forgot it was a holiday…but a student forgetting there isn’t any school. . . .Never Happen!
I showed up for work one time on a Holiday. It wasn’t until I saw the empty parking lot that I had a clue to what I had done. I thought traffic was unusually light that morning. . . The Mrs laughed when I got back home.
