Anything that grows where you don’t want it is a “weed”.

It has my smile, there for it is not a weed.

Biologists have a definition for “weed”, IIRC, and dandelions qualify.

I agree with Frazz. Dandelions are pretty. And the heads are edible. You can find online recipes for batter-fried dandelion blossoms. Never had them, but I keep meaning to try. And then there’s dandelion wine.

The flowers are the tastiest part: they are very sweet.

The entire plant is edible. You can dip the flowers in batter and fry them. The roots and greens can be cooked in many ways. Then there is dandelion wine from the blossoms and the roots can be tinctured for medicine.

I do know…I like my wine made from grapes, preferably those grown in and around Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

I don’t mind a few dandelions. It’s when they take over that I protest. Come the next spring, that dandelion patch is a big dirt spot!

If it will grow without someone bothering to water, fertilize, prune, or otherwise care for it, the plant is a weed.

Ever hear of ‘projection’ as Jungians use the term, the idea of being turned off by another person who reflects qualities we want to disown in ourselves? I mean, here’s an organism that seems to have butted its way into practically everywhere in the world, that gobbles up resources at the expense of more attractive species, that fills the air with debris…

When I was a kid we called them dandyflowers. I live in a condo and don’t personally have to fool with them. I don’t mind looking out of the window and seeing a pop of color, but they seem to drive some of my neighbors nuts.

Dandelions may look nice, but they are a major cause of allergies.

A rose is a weed in a wheat field, just as wheat is a weed in a rose garden. See City of Dallas v Edward Fritz. Fritz had a “lawn” of climax prairie and they called it weeds. Ned, an environmental lawyer, defended on grounds that he wanted the beauty of a prairie (and lack of needing to mow). He won, although the city made him hide it behind a hedge.

catnip is a weed and it’s a billion dollar business. We used to eat poke salad in the South. Isn’t it a weed? It grows wild around our property and actually I plan on picking and fixing it this week.

Dandelions were introduced to North America from Europe as edible plants. They became weeds when people decided that they needed a putting green lawn in front of the house, and those pesky flowers kept getting in the way.Yes, dandelions cause allergies in some people, but many grasses and trees are worse.

I’m not a big fan of dandelions – they get everywhere. I had lots of them when I lived in Canada.

I love dandelions. I also love how the official flower of the military child is the dandelion – based on how they can thrive in so many places and grow wherever they’re planted.

I’m glad to see that a lot of other people enjoy dandelions as much as I do……..They really compliment the violets in the lawn…They’re beautiful. The fact is, all weeds have flowers…How can they not be considered flowers?

Which brings us to the Tomato as vegetable concept. Technically, all flowers turn into fruit. An ovum with seeds. Tomatoes can only be a fruit. The stems, leaves and roots are vegetables…..and rhubarb is a vegetable…Garrison Kealer is fond of saying tomatoes are a fruit trying to be a vegetable. I propose that Rhubarb is a vegetable that’s trying to be a fruit….

I don’t like the powdery mildew on the dandelions; it spreads to other plants & kills them. Instead, I prefer the fruits, vegetables, and flowers I plant. As for consuming dandelions, consider the French name "pissenlit’ as a warning that it’s a diuretic.

dandelions are a weed because they can take over your yard or garden. you want to get rid of them. why? because 200/300 dandilion seeds from one plant germanate. the plant can multaply quickly.so in 11/2 years your garden or yard will have dandilions all over the place, the roots will suffacate your plants, and thus your garden is ruined by a weed. dandilions are really bad because they germanate so quickly than other weeds! get rid of them in your yard immeditally! (this probally stop the argument in the comments if dandilions are weeds or not)

Dandelion flowers sauteed in butter are yummy! Bitter and salty. My grandfather made dandelion wine once. Very good substitute for turpentine.

Yes, dandelions are invasive. Anything that chokes out all other plant life is a bad thing.

Dandelion greens ARE GREAT WITH HOT BACON DRESSING, the wine if made correctly is good, the yellow flowers are pretty, dead head them as soon as they die off and you are “good to go”!

there’s also a legal definition for “noxious weeds” which are plants that cause harm and are difficult to eradicate. Many of them are toxic to animals and/or invasive.
