Elizabeth. Better cover that laughing mouth before Elly sees you and starts lecturing you some more. Who are we kidding? Even after losing her own keys on the lawn, Elly will still be lecturing Elizabeth tomorrow. I guarantee it.
LOL. However, I feel John should have intervened when Elly used the word ‘stupid’. She is angry and on a roll, and John should have interrupted, saying “We are upset about having to pay for another pair of glasses. Please remember that when you take your glasses off to put them in a safe place. Not someplace where other people could step on it or move it or something which happened at the lake. You are a big girl now and it’s time for you to learn about being responsible for your stuff.” Let Elly step back and cool off. However, Mike did that quite effectively by dangling her key ring on his finger.
Well, Ellie had my sorta sympathy until the “stupid” comment. NOT cool. In my own family we have a “parent” who calls her kids dumb or stupid at every error they make. Hope they don’t try to live up to it.
The glasses will be found in the girls’ changing room where the guy who found them yesterday on the beach took them, thinking they looked like a girl’s. That’s my guess.
I usually stick up for Elly but I think on this one she has gone over the edge. I got my first pair of glasses when I was six. I never lost or broke them, but my mother would freak out when I would leave them in my desk at school. Eventually I realized that I couldn’t see without them and they never left my face.
I understand the monetary value involved here, but children are children and mistakes happen. Helping her understand that this is a big deal without overreacting is critical. It is one of the most important things that I have learned since becoming a grandparent. I wish I had a better perspective when my own were young, but the pressures are different. Being a grandparent is the BEST!
I went through a period where I kept losing light-weight jackets. I think I lost three, then bought one at Goodwill, which I still have 35 years later.
My family has a saying: “You have to be smart to be stupid”. If you do something out of ignorance, you don’t know any better and you are not stupid, nor is the thing you do stupid. If you do something that you know is wrong, that is stupid. Elizabeth knew she should be careful with her glasses.
I’ve lost my glasses in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. My parents were cool about it. She’ll probably discover that she did what she was told and the glasses are at the bottom of her bag.
jeez mom,,, i lost so many pair at her age ! i know i got two or three pair a year. usually broke them, but lost plenty. no big, shit, at least she didn’t drown ! well, know that those keys were found on the lawn, i hope an honest apology is forthcoming. my God, i cannot believe i am commenting like this on a cartoon strip. lmaooooooooooooooooo
I lost a pair of glasses when I was about Elizabeth’s age. We looked everywhere (we thought) and couldn’t find them. My dad thought my punishment should be doing without. A year or more later while rearranging the furniture in my bedroom we flipped the box springs on my bed and there they were. We figured what had happened is I fell asleep while wearing the glasses and then later when I rolled over they fell off, bounced and ended up inside the box spring. Weird. Of course, by the time we found them my prescription had changed so much they were useless anyway.

For a change Michael looks like he’s coming to Elizabeth’s defense instead of tormenting her.

And with the cost of a modern car key it would be more expensive to loose your keys.

Come on, never use the word “stupid” about your own kid, or her actions. At that age, it takes so little to leave a lasting impression.

Elly used the word stupid toward her child’s. That is never acceptable over lost eyeglasses.

By now they should all be more worried about what she’s going to do without them tomorrow. Options when this cartoon took place were very limited.
