Why should we hear of either of them? They are self indulgent thrill seekers. I don’t condemn them, but see no reason why their activities need to be general knowledge.
Caulfield can play on a baseball team, if he decides to, and play well. But it seems he’d rather look for the motivation that causes individuals to risk death in mastering dangerous pursuits – the standouts. Perhaps because, in some ways, he identifies with that thinking, that he is not herd material.
I know of both of them. Elite trail/mountain running like Kilian does is nowhere as dangerous as free-climbing. Especially for him. He grew up in the mountains.
Mrs. Olsen really should have learnt by now to explicitly say “…about this subject?” instead of expecting Caulfield to assume it. One almost wonders if she secretly enjoys his “questions.”
A couple years ago I watched a documentary that followed 5 flying-suit jumpers (I neither recall their name for their actions, nor care enough to look it up). One of them said “In every jump, there is a moment when you ask yourself ‘Is this jump worth dying for?’ Then you say ‘Yes!’ and jump.”
It was 5 of them because they edited out the 2 who died jumping in the somewhat-less-than-one-year it took to do the filming.
I leave you to draw your own conclusions as to the soundness of mind required to engage in such things.
Um, nice artwork today. No exact answer as to why people do hazardous things trying to “cheat death”, but would guess that deep down they are unhappy and trying to express it.
Wow! Amazing how people will turn anything into trolling. I first heard this gem from a flippant Safety NCO over 40yrs ago “Never play russian roulette with an automatic and never play leapfrog with a unicorn, now get to work” Of course I shamelessly used it some 15yrs later in my own safety briefings.
Yeah, that stuff is just nuts. I don’t watch either, but I like stuff somewhere in-between, like X games and World’s Strongest Man. I liked Ninja Warrior, but then I realized it was way too dependent on grip strength, and some obstacles depended a lot on being tall.

How about people who play Russian roulette with automatics?

If Caulfield was more of a stats junkie instead of a literature junkie, I am quite sure he would enjoy baseball.

While I applaud their courage the insane stupidity it takes to do such things boggles my mind.

Since when does Caulfield begin with “I have one”? Normally he launches right into the question.
