    EVERYBODY loves punkins!

At least the ones who don’t get all hung up on appearances and what people will think.

We had a neighbor who kept pumpkins around so he could lure his cattle back when they broke out. And if you offer broken pieces to pigs, you’d best be WELL out of the way when they get there…

When me and the wife bought our house on the west side of Detroit we put pumpkins out and the next morning they were gone .

I thought some kids took them and smashed them my neighbor saw me looking and came out and said a pack of squirrels descended on them and ate them lol .

Haven’t had that trouble here in our central Va burb. Plenty of squirrels but they show no interest in the pumpkins on display.

Here in Tucson, javelinas will come into neighborhoods near the desert, and they absolutely love pumpkins.

I’ve never had a squirrel eat one of our pumpkins – carved or uncarved. Occasionally one will take a bite of the plastic eggs we hang on the trees at Easter . . . because so much of their diet is comprised of things that are hot pink, and electric blue, I guess. Maybe we just have nutty squirrels here . . .

I love to see the news items where they are fed to zoo animals.

Call me a buzzkill if you will, but using acres of arable land, pulling nutrients out of the soil, using energy, water and fertilizer to grow a crop that most people throw into a landfill site worries me. Make pumpkin pie people, make pumpkin pie!

I am so down with Fat Squirrel Week! But I have to drive to Wisconsin buy Fat Squirrel (and pity those who can’t).

On the upside, while I’m behind the Cheddar Curtain, I can also get some Spotted Cow, Uff-Da, Two Women, etc. (New Glarus is the best!)

This year’s champion Fat Bear is #747, aka “Bear Force One”, aka “Colbert”. The “747” is simply the bear’s number, but probably the source of his “Bear Force One” sobriquet; “Colbert” is a sly reference to a certain late-night TV host who also has a malformed right ear.

This is the first year I can recall that squirrels have attacked our pumpkins within 24 hours of us putting them on the porch.
