I’m still surprised that Gunther’s Mom doesn’t seem to be worried about her 18-year-old son moving down to Peru, without some obvious planning! All we know now is that he Isn’t going to MU… I guess it remains to be seen what He will do there…that is, if Greg lets us “see” his adventure… ;)

And that’s the beauty of challenges like this…. You never knew what you could do, unless you’ve been presented with things that you can’t do. Or for some of them, what you thought you couldn’t do……

Looks like Mom’s a little more hip to Gunther getting out and finding out who he really is without her help than one might’ve thought. On the other hand, it seemed like Rosa’s reaction was more along the “Well, okay…whatever” line, like it didn’t matter a lot to her one way or the other if Gunther went along, as though she likes him but she really isn’t all that into him.

Most likely, he’ll end up just letting Rosa dress him as she sees fit. That’ll handle the new shirts part with Rosa’s superior fashion sense.

Gunther doesn’t seem to be too concerned about having to speak Spanish…so, it is my guess that he took AP Spanish classes in high school and, because of that, is almost fluent in that language. Now all he will need to learn is Peruvian Spanish… ;)

.-Yes, I think Rosa really likes Gunther but has not settled on him as “the one.” Basically, he needs to go to Peru for himself. Gunther, will you regret this if you don’t have a girlfriend in 3 months? Or will you be blubbering “I did this for you!!!”. Rosa seems the type that could stay friends with her exes, so I don’t think he’d be completely alone.

It could be something Gunther had already been wrestling with (in wanting to branch out, break free), before Rosa…just probably had envisioned “another time, another place”….. and this “door of opportunity” was surely one that he never thought would open!

After analyzing today’s strip:

Gunther needs to discover a new girlfriend!

I can assure you that Greg Evans has a job lined up for Gunther in Peru!

Maybe mom will get a new hairstyle too.

Ma Berger has a nice sense of self-deprecating humor, shown in her “new shirts” comment to her plaid obsessed son. But Gunther is a young man now, in years, though his emotional/mental maturity is lagging a bit. The trip to Peru will indeed do him good. Lima is a large (almost 9 million inhabitants in the metro area), diverse city with a multitude of attractive features (see the wikipedia article). I’m not sure his relationship with Rosa will thrive, however, though I hope it will.

I predict that Gunther’s mom will also be eliminated from the strip once Gunther leaves for Peru.

I’m wondering when Quill will eventually leave the strip.

Ouch! Mom, that was mean!*I am starting to agree that Mom’s got something going on on the side— perhaps Gunther’s father has returned?*In any event, Gunther may be throwing away his scholarship as this is not just a summer adventure.

“I have found the perfect Peruvian material for Gunther’s shirts.”-This would look great on Gunther. Picturing a sleeveless button up shirt with the collar opened to the solar plexus.

This is how Rosa tricked Gunther into her plan:

It’s big thing is that it’s supposed to be very healthy, but served plain it’s like eating mushy cardboard. ^It’s just like some people in life… by themselves, they seem “insignificant”, or “unpalatable”. But combined with others, their enjoyable essence is then noticed!

She wants him out of the house so they can remodel his room into a ………..

It seems mom is kicking her chick from the nest. She realizes even if Gunther doesn’t, he’ll get the type of education he really needs by leaving MU behind for a while. Sometimes time between HS and college is a good thing, it lets you find who you really are. Myself, I never regretted not going to college.

OK, I think it’s time to move it along, a bit. Let’s get back to Gunther and Rosa talking about logistics and how this is all going to work…

Maybe Friday’s strip will be Gunther’s “Independence Day.” :-)

I realize that Gunther’s mom is being very supportive of the decision and very calm, but this got me thinking: Is it possible she KNOWS he isn’t really going and is letting him discover that for himself? Just a thought.

I just noticed how well Gunther knows how to lay out a pattern on plaid material. If he gets tired working in a clinic, he can get a job in a shirt factory in Peru. Luann, herself, will need some jump juice to make her role in this comic as interesting as Gunther’s looks to be in the future.But then that’s true looking at other peoples’ lives from our individual perspective. With the characters going off in different directions there may be too many story arcs to follow . . . there a wedding coming up too!

I can’t believe that any mother with a son as bright as Gunther would let him give up a college education with a degree in engineering with a scholarship. Maybe she is trying reverse psychology?

Maybe part of it has to do with his “potential”. People see that he could be more ….-In his current state, he may get “pigeonholed” into just being "another name” or “ a statistic”… but if he has this experience, he may come out of it being able to identify and even develop other qualities that would make him stand out in a lot of ways.– Same thing happens to us in school. They put a “not working up to potential” report on your report card. Now you could have decent, average marks, and still have that on there. Why? Because they see that you could be more than just “So and so, a student”. or ‘just another student passing through the halls’. They see that you could learn to make the “routine” become something special …..

-I’m not sure, but I think that ‘breaking the 4th wall’ is when a character talks directly to those of us who are reading the strip.

-Sit down! LOL!!!!

-I honestly think Mrs. Berger was joking with Gunther when she said he might discover new shirts. She could see that he was getting a bit scared about self-discovery, and was trying to get him to calm down.

I’m getting tired of this convoluted story line where everyone’s personality has drastically changed. Time for more about Toni and Brad.

-You would have to include Gunther himself among the characters who think he needs to change. I’m not able to copy and paste older comics the way others here are, but there are many examples of Gunther telling himself and others that he needs to change.-And I don’t think his mother is saying she doesn’t like him. She’s telling him he has an opportunity to learn new things about himself, which is another way of describing the process we call ’growing up."

The saddest part is that there is some girl going to Moony who would love Gunther just the way he is, but now she will not meet him.

It is interesting that not one character likes Gunther for who he is. Not his girlfriend, not his own mother…no one. Everyone agrees he has to change.".And as I said yesterday, we men don’t change.

Many posters in here, including Gunther’s own mother want Gunther to wear different style shirts.

SOLUTION:Join the military!Gunther would benefit from learning discipline, teamwork and tactical skills that he obviously lacks!

In the strip I posted above, one of the motivating factors he mentioned wasn’t girls. He said: “travelling, adventures”. then , he mentioned Rosa…..

Please tell me his isn’t go to Peru and Rosa changes her mind and goes to Yale instead.

Obviously Gunther’s mom took some time to “find herself” after high school. She found her self with Gunther.

Poor Gunther. He will go to the slums of Peru, shack up, knock up, and eventually give up. .

-You do realize that there are a lot of jobs involved with a clinic that have nothing to do with actually providing medical care, I hope. For example, for those who volunteer with ‘Doctors without Borders’, there are people who serve as translators, people who go out to the villages to explain the services to those who have never seen a doctor, people who apply for grants and loans to keep a clinic operating, people who meet with those who might donate money or goods, people who give speeches to business groups to recruit volunteers, etc. etc.

Well, it’s not like Lu should be totally surprised, given how Rosa and she were the first to discuss “plan c.” That, and she may still be hanging on to Quill (she hasn’t formally dumped him yet…). Still, when faced with the actual reality of Gunther departing, I wonder if she might get a little “clingy,” nonetheless. It’s all about “her,” right? :-)

I didn’t forget about that one. But it wasn’t the underlying reason . Way before that, he contemplated change. She was one catalyst, but as I stated, he mentioned the travelling and the adventure in the next strip, when he got down a little deeper to what he wanted…..

Gunther will need to look for Guayabera shirts down there. They are the best for hot weather dressy attire.
