Coming Soon đ At the beginning of April, youâll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
Leslie is a demented dangerous psychotic person who will react very badly when he finds out Pru is a lesbianâŠviolence against LGTB is a fact of life and when a homophobe thinks heâs been tricked, duped, or played..well watch out PrudenceâŠbetter yet, get on the next plane, train or bus back to New York RIGHT NOW.
Setting the bait for Pru. It might be a little awkward but Pru will be nice about informing him of her status. Now, if this happened to my cousin, Les would end up in the Vienna Boyâs Choir.
Pru seems like the type of person who can hold her own, and let Les know in a nice way that she is not available for him. And if there IS any trouble, there is always Ox to the rescue.
@notbornyesterday @anyface I donât want to appear to be an insensitive prick, because I do understand where youâre coming from, and I empathize with you. My only soapbox issue is the constant misuse of the word âhomophobeâ. Due to the politically correct climate weâre forced to live in, everyone interprets the word as meaning someone who hates gays, i.e. homosexuals. In actuality, itâs not hatred, but fear. For example, if one was a misogynist, he would hate or despise women. But if he was a gynophobe, heâd be afraid of women. For someone who hates homosexuals, I think you need another word. I dunnoâŠmisohomy? Yes, I know it sounds ridiculous, but I think you see what Iâm talking about. BTW, homophobia also means âfear of monotonyâ; thatâs because the root prefix âhomo-â means âsameâ. Happy New Year, yâall!
Oblique political implications may be okay here, especially when they relate in some way to the strip content. However, regardless of what political camp you call home, it seems to me that viciously tearing into a real politician or group that you disagree with actually amounts to âhate speechâ. And I donât think itâs appropriate on this forum. Some such posts have been getting deleted.
heâs only getting a peck on the cheek. letâs hope he doesnâtâpeckâ pru(neâs) cheek. looks like the new yearâs âno dramaâ wish of Nancyâs is not happening. and Leslieâs talent for making bad decisions is not helping.
âCan we please stop with the politics on this forum? Go to your safe spaceâ
.
âCan we stop with politicsâ he says, and then follows it up with one of the stupid insult cliches that Trumpites repeat over and over and over again, because they have no minds of their own.
.
Although there is irony in the fact that the most easily offended people Iâve ever seen â followers and worshipers of a man who stays up all night complaining that SNL makes fun of him â talking about OTHER peopleâs need for a âsafe space.â
Lots of foreshadowing going on. Les is about to be revealed as anti-LGBTQ. If Green Shirt doesnât get an ass-whoopinâ in tomorrowâs strip, or sometime into next week, then perhaps the violence might fall upon Pru. Letâs not forget that we have a Superbowl coming in 5 weeks, and there is usually a spike in the reporting of violence against women (be it domestic, or street), on Super Sunday. Perhaps this arc is gonna be part of an awareness-building effort of some kind. Maybe the polarized climate of the US election and aftermath was an influence in the writing.
I found myself wondering several things. Yes, it is possible that the young man is gay. It is even possible that he is or was Lesâs boyfriend. However, it also is possible that Les knows his voice from elsewhere, for example from a rehab program of some kind. It might be that recognizing his voice is what has startled Les.
So this is Step 2? Hang out under mistletoe, waiting for Pru to show up? Reminds me of those 4 steps to success that go, 1. (something stupid), 2. (something even more stupid), 3. ???, 4. Profit!
Oh, and apologies to the general population here for when i express myself poorly recently. With Steveâs mom passing on the 24th we are all run down.
My one problem with this comic is that I have never known a gay person who would presume that kissing a stranger was appropriate under ANY circumstances, mistletoe or not.
No one is forced to kiss someone just because there is mistletoe nearby. If the guy asks Les for a kiss, Les can politely say No. The same way as if it were a male and female. Consent is always needed.
Who knowsâŠ.maybe Leslieâs ongoing crappy actions and decisions stem from repressed homoerotic tendencies. at any rate, as a gay man I too vote against homophobic actions in the strip (though thereâs really only two votes that matter).
Just one post is missing. I still had the page up without refreshing it, your original post is still there with Temploâs as the second one. I opened a new page, and Temploâs has moved from second to first. Almost sounds like a baseball game.
.
Whoâs on first, Whatâs on second, I Donât Knowâs on thirdâŠ
Seems kind of iffy that a complete stranger, male or female, would proposition Les like that, tradition or no tradition. Maybe the guy knows Les and heâs messing with him, or there is someone with the guy whoâs out of sight behind the archway, and THEY will be standing underneath the mistloe âŠ..
*"Criticizing a politician is NOT âhate speech.â *.I dunno.
I have a cousin who is convinced all condemnation of a certain politician is because of his race. I pointed out that other people who said or did certain things were also condemned, but she remains unconvinced. (There is little doubt some of what she says is true, that race is a factor, but people have avoided saying so for the most part, for fear of condemnation just like hers.)
.
â*Hate speech would be attacking a personâs race, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or national origin. Iâm criticizing his personality, his character (or lack of), and what heâs been doing.â*
.
But what if a personâs personality and character is due to a birth defect (like the Grinch: âIt could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. It could be his head wasnât screwed on just right. May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.â)? That would mean you have been condemning him for a disability, you hate speacher, you.
.
Regardless, people are free to speak hatefully and many do so.
Others are just as free to disagree with what they say and many do so.
Our Constitution protects their right to say what is in their minds and this is a good thing because we know what kind of person a speaker is.
And regarding the man who badmouthed the woman I love (yes, in addition to Patsy, I am a very loving man) and her husband Barack),
Jim Heaney has expressed much disagreement and disgust with the gentleman over the years but he writes:
.
âYou donât like what Paladino has said?
.
âDemand his resignation, as many rightfully have.
.
âTalk to him in a language he understands by boycotting his businesses.
.
âPicket his house, although donât expect the sidewalk will be shoveled for you.
.
âAppeal to the appropriate legislative body to provide for the recall of School Board members through electoral means.â
.
He points out the danger of letting the government decide who can be in the government by removing them from office:
.
Think about it. We have a president elect who displays authoritarian tendencies. For example, Xxxxxx Xxxxx has already said those who exercise their First Amendment rights to burn the United States flag should be punished. Never mind that the Supreme Court has upheld such activity as legal.
To remain on topic, I bet Leslie would disapprove of such hateful speech but donât know if he would want people punished â other than by ostracism as has rightfully been done to him most of his life
âOur Constitution protects their right to say what is in their mindsâ
.
Schrodingerâs Dog said,
âBut this isnât one; as the TOS points out this is a site owned by Universal Uclick. Thus there exists no such ârightâ here; only what the mods tolerate.
.
True.
Nonetheless they were/are wanting the government to have the power to restrict speech up to and including who can be elected to hold office. Whereas, I am glad people feel free to speak their minds so I can see who all the haters are, the people who hate Christians, for example.
.
And the mods have been extremely tolerant, so much so, that if they become intolerant over more than the most egregious offenses, one will have to wonder about the cause of the discrimination.
âThe mods, GoComics, and Universal are probably also very worried that the incoming administration has said that it wants to do away with net neutrality. That could have a very negative effect on their business and on our access.â
.
It probably wonât come up before the nukes go off all over the world.
.
With that in mind, as David Nivenâs character said, to the daughter in The Impossible Years (1968):
Linda Kingsley: [her parents are trying to get her to clean up her very messy room] How can you make such a big deal out of one little messy room when this whole world is flying apart? Crime on the streets! Strontium-90 in our milk! Push-button warfare! Why, do you realize that at any moment, we might be blasted off the face of this earth?
.
Jonathan Kingsley:
All right. So weâll be blasted. But when we are, you are going with a clean room!
