Bernice in the final panel saying, “I’ve got this” reminds me of George Lopez. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBw1phH_4iw (At the end of the video reminds me of Jack now.)
Arrrgh, granted that it is predictable that the combo of Bernice’s concern for Luann and her control freak personality woukd cause problems, but can’t she put aside the second to allow Jack to carry Luann? It would be safer and kinder.
Yesterday i mentioned the Aesop fable, the Eagle and the Jackdaw, and saud that for me it applies to Bernice for reasons other than vanity (like self-delusion) but with the last panel today i think it also applies in relation to vanity for Bernice!
Luann can’t be too mad at him – she is responding to the affirmative that she wants him to carry her to the car. But, considering the alternative that is happening now…
Bernice has insulted Nil and Jack, and is now attempting a “rescue” that would go so much easier if she’d just accept their help. I know that both the snarkiness/putting others down and the need to control the situation probably come from deep-seated feelings of insecurity or worse… but it’s getting harder and harder to feel any sympathy for her.
Re Tigger: I feel for you guys having had to put up with that. Even if there were those of us who agreed with his politics, those posts didn’t belong here.
WOW! A lot of theater here – each frame defining a personality. Nil seems to have Aspergers. Jack is a decent guy – anybody can have an accident. Luann is forgiving. Bernice jumps in to take care of an emergency but seems to know nothing about kindness.
Why has nobody commented on the care and concern that Jack is showing? Bernice is obviously trying to control the situation, and she as usual is so clueless as to hurt Luann and not let Jack take her to emergency, and to pick her up so her broken foot is not hurt further. It’s hilarious and illustrating. Bernice is so concerned about protecting her friend and is jumping to inaccurate conclusions she does not see that Jack clearly is concerned, and is ready, willing, and able to help. And I think Luann wants him to help. Bernice as a character is as clueless as most of the commentators so far, except for Ken Hense who seems to agree with what I perceive. Nil is horrible. All he can do is make totally useless and insensitive comments with no showing of empathy (there, there is that word again); he is as clueless as Bernice in his own way. I think that Jack may be a much better person and maybe a match for Luann than those who think he is some kind of Neanderthal. And actually Neanderthal’s were a pretty advanced human species, but were reproduced out of existence by homo sapiens, us. So give the big, kind, fun guy a break. He is the one most advanced human acting character in this arc. I like him, but Nil is testing my patience. Bernice is being Bernice, and Luann needs kindness and empathy right about now.
I saw Bernice today at lunch. She is actually working at Pizza hut in central Stockholm. However her nameplate said “Vera”, so she must be her incognito.
I think Bernice may be doing more harm than good. Meanwhile Jack is trying to be a sympathetic gentleman… Anyone else not named Bernice would have yielded to such chivalry.
Bernice’s comment towards Jack was a bit uncalled for. What he did was only an accident. And from the last panel, it’s clear he’d get Luann to the hospital a lot faster than Bernice.
I think it’s ironic that with all the irresponsible goofing off that Jack and Luann were doing no one got hurt, but after they calmed down and Jack was showing Lu that his fingers didn’t fit in the ball (like he told her they didn’t), that’s when she got hurt.
Bern should not ever be a therapist. I know she’s young and has a lot to learn, but, speaking as someone who trained as a therapist and worked as one for several years, the worst therapists I’ve known were the ones who thought they were superior to everyone, they ones who could not get over themselves, the ones who could not see their client’s point of view. That’s where Bern is right now, and I’m afraid that there is nothing in her life to change that.
Okay, here is a fun one. It looks like Luann possibly has a broken foot. Let’s treat that as a set-up for future arc and come up w possible outcomes. Someone has already suggested Jack carrying her between classes. What about at art class. What will Zebu draw on a cast if she gets a cast (someone else mentioned special boots used)? What about at home? Will Pru rearrange her room for ease and comfort? Will Luann like it? Will she be able to keep her job? (The boss seems considerate.) Will one of the kids trip over her cast?
Personally, i am hoping that they write in her having PT and being inspired.
For me, yesterday’s and today’s “comic” have both been an unexpected and disappointing turn of events:
1. I am annoyed at the new “who gives a damn” attitude that Greg has imbued Nil with in this situation. I had really enjoyed Nil as a character up until this point, and I am disappointed at this new development of his character.
2. While I am glad that Bernice has shown care and concern (yesterday I was not sure she would), Bernice is smart enough to know that if Luann’s foot is hurt enough to warrant a trip to the hospital, that she should not be dragging her there, but should accept Jack’s help.
3. I wish I would have been correct in my hope from yesterday that the bowling ball had only hit her foot in a glancing way and did not cause such severe injury.
I would have found it much more entertaining if we would have simply had more time with the four of them having fun together at the bowling alley.
I am not sure what it is, does anyone know what the white “box” is that is next to Nil, that was (I believe) where Bernice was sitting just moments ago?
Reminds me of an incident in college. My future wife and I were part of a musical theater production and during a dress rehersal, she badly twisted her ankle doing a move. Two other male cast members were looking at her on the ground trying to figure out how they were going to get this woman who was as tall as them off the stage and began to try to pick her up together, one shoulders, the other feet. I, on the other hand was a basketball player and much taller and stronger than everyone else. I motioned them out of the way and picked up my friend (and future wife) and carried her to the green room, and then to the infirmary and finally to her room. Moral of the story is to let the jock handle the heavy lifting.
I like how Jack has unfrozen and wants to help, and I don’t have much problem with Nil’s reaction either. Sarcasm doesn’t mean that he doesn’t care, and it doesn’t really come at the expense of anything else he should be doing; for help, Jack is the obvious candidate (obvious to all but control-freak Bernice, that is…) and as for fussing, hovering, and sympathizing, that should be Bern’s job as the much closer friend. So why not try to alleviate the mood with some humor? OK with me.
Meanwhile, Bernice is the really annoying one. And Luann could really use that other eye she’s about to put out… :s
If Luann doesn’t have insurance through her part-time job (most likely, she doesn’t) or through her college, she may still have coverage under her parent’s policies. Hate to bring this up, but this is one of the first things the emergency room people will ask about (unless she’s having a heart attack), so Bernice should be calling Nancy and Frank, not trying to lift Luann and carry her…
As an alternative theory, maybe that’s Bernice’s idea of help, being an order freak as well: so Luann is only going to have one foot? OK, then let’s get rid of one of her eyes too – one off the bottom, one off the top! ;p
A lot of folks here are piling on Bernice. Luann is her life long best friend and Jack and Nil are people she has known for less than a day (and she hasn’t been able to connect to either… and she doesn’t trust Jack). So she is coming to her best friend’s rescue, a natural response. Let’s see what happens. I have this sneaking suspicion that Jack and Nil will be left alone in the bowling alley to contemplate their double date adventure.
I see a parallel between the time Bernice went to Luann’s aid after she broke up with Quill and to rescue her from Pru (whom she thought was stealing Quill) only to find Luann and Pru sitting together and Pru comforting her. Bernice then realized how she had misinterpreted Pru. But that same sense of resolve and determination to right a perceived wrong is on Bern’s face in Panel 1 today.
Really off topic – a few days ago, one of you mentioned working with Collins radio equipment. What was it? A 30L1? I used to work with the 30S1, but you couldn’t drop that one; it was the size of a small refrigerator! A quick shout out to anyone who has ever worked with the Collins KWM2A family of amateur and military radio equipment!
Under the category of NOT LIKELY, BUT I’D LOVE TO SEE IT PLAY OUT…. What if Jack and Bernice recognize each other’s warm concern for Luann? And what if they bond over it? Not much odder than the Crystal/Knute pairing, and with lots of comic/entertainment potential. To upgrade a common cliché, there’s much to enjoy in the paradoxical co-incidence of opposites.
I wonder if there will be some hospital scenes (that would mean Greg has to draw some different environments and characters).. or will we just cut to Luann at home with a foot boot…the lower hanging fruit from the sketching standpoint.
My gf and I have experienced the same problem with my nephew. He was best friends with her and he kept acting like a jerk to me to break us up. He would of done the same thing as Bernice did in today’s strip just to prove that she doesn’t need anyone but him.
