Fay has not only prevented herself from being distracted by Axel, but has also mastered the ability not to be distracted by upside down dialogue. Oddly enough the play now appears to be about Zorro.
I know what happened to axel’s face. Someone slapped axel so hard that his facial features are forever sideways. That’s why he wears the glasses so he doesn’t look too screwed up.
Boy every time I am up and see the first comments I say to myself, are these people looking at the same comic? To me clearly, Fay is embarrassed to the extreme, being shy, and being totally in a huge crush on Axel. I think too many OLD commentators forgot what it was like when they were teenagers, and how their elders thought they were totally useless, and a scourge on the future of mankind. Come on fellow Boomers, we we not the total apple of our Depression, World War 2 parents, but we came out okay, and in fact really became an updated version of them, dammit!! Fay needs to get confidence generally, be able to prove to herself how talented she is specifically, and be brave enough to stand up to and totally seduce Axel,or maybe not. Axel is hardly a delinquent, and a 12 or 13 year old tween boy having an attitude, is “no thing” Give that a break please!! And the “smirk” on Luann’s face? Jeez! She is ruefully smiling, with understanding, as seeing Fay holding her script book upside down, reminds Luann that she has “been there, done that”. She is the best person in Luannverse to help this sweet little girl become more confident and FIERCE in a nice way of course. To much “THESE KIDS TODAY” here IMO.
Axel’s girlfriend or sister must be in the show. That’s the only reason I can think of for a teenage boy to have any interest in The Wizard of Oz. Unless it’s the girfriend or sister of his friend.
And maybe Luann should ask Fay why she’s so stuck on a jerk who ignores her. He doesn’t seem to have any attractive features.
I don’t know if anyone mentioned this possibility cause I didn’t read all of yesterday’s or today’s comments yet, but………….
What if ole’ pouty lips (Axel) and his pal the son of Frankenstein (not yet named) are there because Axel has a massive crush on the girl who’s playing Dorothy in the play?
Here’s a thought: Maybe Axel and his oblong pal genuinely enjoy the theater experience! Sure, they both seem to be showing the ‘attitude’ on the surface, but I’ve seen that happen before – a person who comes off as perhaps callused, crass, bit of a jerk, maybe – just simply sitting back to watch and enjoy a show, maybe learn something. Nothing wrong with that a’tall! But the question remains: WHY is he there now??!!
While I very, very much dislike Axel’s " ’tude" and demeanor…. I am going to switch tactics and really try to give the dude as much of the benefit of the doubt as I can…. and try to envision him actually choosing to attend the play, and that his idiotic " ’tude" is all for show and bluster so he feels like he fits in with the “cool” group, whoever the hell he thinks those kids are. If he has to become some type of semi-regular member of the comic…. I sure hope we get to see a nice “inside” version of him that is different than his ’ ’ tude".
I am continuing to enjoy the interaction between Luann and Fay. I like this ability Luann is showing to be a mentor. I also like Fay in all regards (except maybe her potential “boy crush” choices…. wait…. NO…. I have to keep thinking Axel is nice, dammit!!!).
I will conclude by wondering aloud here…. might Greg’s planned story path be that we watch Luann guide Fay to be all “calm, cool, and collected” around Axel… and then at the end of the week we Luann lose her own “cool” and become all flummoxed by seeing Quill as the Director or some such thing?
I hope the Quill thing does not happen, but it does seem a somewhat realistic story path that Greg might take. But, I hope not…. I like the other folks Luann has been hanging out with and having “dates” with more than when she dated Quill.
I applaud your efforts to see a more favorable aspect of Axel’s demeanor. I watched the many friends of my two sons during their teen years and know they try to put up a big front to hide their feeling vulnerable. Now I liked Quill and believe that the experience of a relationship like they had was an important part of learning about loving relationships. It didn’t have to last forever to be a good thing. Both Luann and Quill did some growing up in the experience. Hopefully Axel will learn that being rude is not cool.
I “get” Fay, really! But, geez, can’t she just quietly (which comes habitually except when around Luann!) watch the play and then slink out hiding behind Luann afterwards?

Will this mean anything?

How Do You Expect Two Sullen Teenage Males, One With an “Attitude Problem,” to Not Enjoy this Play? One that They were No Doubt, FORCED to Attend??

Fay was holding the book the right way up in panel one. What possessed her to flip it upside down?

Both Luann and Axel pull Fay out of her chronic box.
But in divergent directions. Luann is a tornado. Axel is a half-wrecked storm shelter.
I think Luann is having a tug-of-war with Axel.
