Either we are about to begin the storyline of “How they convince TJ to move out in order to make room for Shannon” or the storyline of “How if you sleep on your face wrong, like TJ did, you will have one eyebrow way up your forehead and the other one almost on top of your other eye.”
Yech. Old Smiley. I thought the hairs were standing up on the back of my neck for a reason.
Hey Smiley. Shouldn’t You be packing and checking out the supermarket realtor magazines for a new place to stay? Youre in luck. I hear the Berger house will be available soon…..,
Haven’t Toni and Brad learned to say “no” to others? Like, “No, Shannon. You can’t sleep with me in my and your uncle’s bed.” “No, T.J. You can’t continue to live with us.” “No, Jonah. We’re not going to watch Shannon again because she’s your daughter, not ours.”
Maybe Gunther will finally get a break and find somebody else to live with. TJ could share the guest house with Les and pay a little rent. TJ has a very thick skin – which helps a lot.
Yep, I said it yesterday that yesterday’s strip was a lead-in to the roommate moving out. Luann1212 said TJ was not important to this arc because he probably moved out hence why he was missing from recent Toni-Brad-Shannon arcs. I didn’t think so otherwise Brad would sleep in TJ’s old room if he had and not on the couch. Shannon stays over frequently so it makes sense for TJ just to move out – he can afford to live alone.
@CAPRICORN: TJ can definitely afford to live on his own. But it hasn’t been clear that our entry-level firefighters can afford to live without his contribution to rent. They’ve now saved a downpayment (which is about 20% of the total cost in California), but that is no guarantee that they will be able to qualify for a mortgage…
Toni’s comment suggests that she continues to be comfortable with having TJ stay on as a roomer. If it works for them, it works. It’s not my place to second guess what they ought to want for themselves, unconventional living arrangement or not.
I’ve been saying the same thing, (put her on the couch) since Shannon’s dead beat dad dropped her off. Stop the innocence and next time her dad wants to drop her off, Brad Shannon tell him NO!
Get a sofa bed. That way when Shannon (or anyone else) needs to stay overnight, you just take off the sofa cushions and pull out the bed. PS: Sofa beds are usually big enough for TWO people …ahem, Brad / Toni.
Toni and Brad have no right to kick out TJ. Remember when Brad got fired, back in 2010, and TJ offered him 3 thousand dollars to pay his rent? If anything, TJ could give THEM the boot.
I feel bad for TJ in this situation. He has done nothing wrong, but he will be the one who is pushed out or will at least have to find new room mates. It seems as if not much thought will be given to his situation here.
But, oh well, such relationships are rather ephemeral I guess. It appears that Toni and Brad have found what they needed and valued in the year-or-so living relationship with TJ… and so, now that it is not convenient or beneficial for them… shove him out the door or abandon ship and leave him high-and-dry having to find a new living situation.
Great reflection of modern society and selfishness.
I am entirely in favor of TJ’s moving out (first from the house and then from the strip, which he seems almost to have done already), but their needing a room for Shannon’s sleep-overs shouldn’t be the reason. Just having her sleep in the living room is an obvious solution that displaces no one, so why haven’t we been told why this straightforward approach to the problem was rejected?
@CJ: TJ is not the owner of the house. Brad’s parents own the house. Since TJ is not the owner, TJ has no legal right to ‘give Brad and Toni the boot’.
Ah, Brad, you have certainly sold out your own life for the pleasure of sleeping with a good looking woman. But, that good looking woman has also brought you up a step from the loser clunk that you were a few years ago.
@BJSHPLEY: Discipline seems to mean obeying a list of rules laid down by parents or guardians and punishing children if they fail to do so. As a parent of two children who turned out great, I learned early on that it is self-discipline that we need to model and reward. Punishing rarely works, even with dogs. Finally, Toni and Brad are temporary caretakers without the usual prerogatives of a custodial parent.
I’m hesitant judge weather TJ can afford to move out as I really know very little of his finances except that he always seems to have money, which may just make him Ann Awefull without the transparency. For all I know he may be running an online scam. A lot here hinges on weather TJ signed a lease & for how long. Asking him to move out quicky, without knowing if he’s living on credit cards is a good recipe for hurt feelings at best. If TJ is on a month to month, give him his security deposit back, he should be aware and have the savings to move on. Or B&t could say no to sleepovers, or buy the kid a tent.
Let the games begin! OK, the big question now being, how will TJ factor into the plans for the new house? If Brad/Toni go on their own, do Frank/Nancy find a new housemate for TJ to share the rent? And who might that be??? Les? {evil grin} Not Tiff, because Tiff and Gunther need to have their own place. And I’m not sure if Tiff would trust TJ at this point, given their history of “deals gone bad.”
Maybe it’s one of the other characters we haven’t seen for a while (Knute, Ox, etc. etc.). Those should be fairly neutral candidates with whom TJ could live. I guess we’ll have to see.
It’s not like TJ is a roommate Brad found on Craigslist. They have history. TJ has helped BnT and other characters out several times—and he can cook! Yeah, he has questionable judgement often. The point is, there wouldn’t be much to the BnT arcs without the conflict that is provided by TJ, Shannon, and even Jonah.
As far as Shannon is concerned, they let her stay over because they care about her. They can’t change Jonah. If they said NO to him, he’d just find someone else to dump Shannon on—perhaps someone who wouldn’t be looking out for her best interests, and they don’t want to see that happen. Also, her impulsivity has been demonstrated frequently, she needs to be supervised, thus the sleeping arrangements. Even with the frequency of her visits, they are novel to Shannon, and she tends to “explore” and get into stuff. Her having her own room would be ideal…maybe in the new place.
I don’t see a problem with Brad sleeping in the living room occasionally…but no on that love seat! Yep, they need to get a sofa, or sofa-sleeper, futon, or air mattress. I occasionally give up my bed (and master suite) for overnight guests, and use a camp cot in my home office.
The whole Luann gang should have a reunion to meet and evaluate old friends and high school classmates. Observe for themselves how all the choices and decisions affected their lives. They could use modern technology to hook up with Rosa and Delta, and track down Knute and Crystal.
It could be the Evanses are probing healthy boundaries here. When do Toni and Brad get displaced enough that they work out something better with Jonah and Shannon. They tend to have a psychological growth message, (my main interest) while many readers are spinning their wheels over plot oddities or discrepancies.
You can tell the effects of the lack of sleep on Toni. I think she has one or two hairs out of place. Also her lipstick is… OK…her lipstick is still perfect.

A permanent room, Brad?
To be honest, I like Shannon. Given the proper environment, she’d be a great kid.
What do I know, we never had any kids. Wife had to have hysterectomy at early age. :(
