Preparing my comment in advance. As of this writing, I do not know what arc is running on 06-Aug-18. Opening salvo: I took a week off from Luann and I hope you guys enjoyed it!
âMake offer sale?â Bad idea, very bad idea. Theyâll be lucky if they get enough to buy a couple of cheap, put-it-together-yourself pieces of particle board furniture. If theyâre trying to get as much money as possible, they should follow Guntherâs list. They STILL wouldnât get enough to buy a houseful of new furniture, but they would get more money.
Unless of course, this being a comic strip, two crazy, rival antique dealers show up at the same time and start trying to outbid each other for the sofa or something.
I was really hoping for a new arc that focused on the wildfires in California, and sent either Toni or Brad out to fight them. Oh, well. Maybe in a few monthsâŠ
Okay, so Le$, is all up for a quick sale starting with a lamp, (that they should KEEP by the way) which will probably sell for mere pennies on the dollar at their Yard/Garage Sale. Never mind that one gets much, much le$$ selling stuff at a Yard Sale. Oh No. Le$ has got to have that quick buck. I think itâs pretty clear that lad hasnât priced any ânewâ furniture lately.
No Appraisal, No cleaning or repairing to make the stuff look attractive, no researching value. Just a quick sale, which in the end, just might net them a few bucks. MAYBE.
So, tell Me again, âLe$ Lovers,â why your boyâs, plan was such swell idea. Because unless your âheroâ plans to make up the difference money-wise from his OWN pocket, when they invariably fall short of dough from the sale, the ONLY thing theyâre gonna be able to afford is milk crates for the chairs and particle boards for the tables.
In the meantime, Iâll get a fresh pot of COFFEE brewingâŠâŠ.. ;)
BoringâŠboringâŠboring. Snoozefest. Who cares. There are so many other things that would be more interesting than âGunther and Les have a garage sale.âLike, âPuddles meets a skunk.â âDad gets new glasses.â âTJ burns the pot roast.â
I have no idea at all about furniture value. I do know a little about stuff like musical equipment. Itâs often a bit of a downer for people who have older guitars, etc. They think they have something special when the truth is that they have an old guitar. It wasnât special in 1970 and it isnât special today. If the guys need to know what they have. Is it stuff bought at a rooms to go styled store or it is âtake it to antiques roadshow?â
They might be able to get some good money for the big solid pieces, but small stuff like the lamp is going to go for thrift store prices ($5-$15). And Les shouldnât get ANY of the money because itâs not his stuff. Itâs Guntherâs stuff.
This is very ironic here, and I think what could congeal a compromise between Lesâs quick money methods, and Guntherâs research to properly price method is someone coming along who has a good idea of value of these items, and says something that combines Lesâs mercantile instincts, and Guntherâs informational and research ones, resulting in them making far more money than either might have thought. These items are drawn to represent various periods in furniture history; the lamp is 1920s Art Deco I think although I am not an expert. My point is that ironically Gunther is thinking lots of money for a quick sale, Les is willing to accept a little money for a quick sale, events might end up they get a lot, based on serendipity. This might end up being the serendipity arc.
âFolksâ have talked about Gunther getting a job. I think that MAY happen. But unfortunately It wonât be a job closely related to his chosen field or interests. Nope. Too, easy and not âfunny.â Gunthâs âjobâ probably be something MENIAL. Like cashier at Weenie World, or worse, bus-boy/dishwasher at the Fuse.
And Uncle Al may MAKE Gunther take the Job to teach him a bit âresponsibilityâ after he and his âroommateâ practically give Irmaâs furniture away. And all of this will be right down Le$â alley because Gunth will end up working Le$â shifts on his off days, leaving âPoor Le$lieâ free to be alone to entertain Tiffany or any other young lady at the Gulag on the âNew Furnitureâ paid for by Guntherâs new job.
1. An interesting unfolding of ideas over the last week. Gunther, originally very sentimental about his childhood furniture is successfully guided by Les into seeing how unfortunately unsuitable it really is for his new âbachelor padâ that he is sharing with Les. Whatever his actual motives, Les did a pretty good thing here.
2. Gunther seems to have lost his âattachmentâ to his childhood furniture rather rapidly. I was surprised. I am glad, because I thought it was rather hideous for him to have in the new place.
3. Today we see the disparity of perceived value of the furniture between Gunther and Les. Gunther sees the furniture as very pricey and will want to demand top dollar where as Les has what I feel is a more realistic assessment of its value.
4. I suspect the furniture is probably âbudget friendlyâ renditions of Victorian era furniture and of very limited (other than sentimental) value. So, I think Les is probably accurate.
5. With the limited budget those two will likely have, they themselves will really need to go rummaging around at garage sales for furniture. They can if they give it some time, likely find more âregularâ styles of furniture to purchase cheaply to fill their new abode.
6. However, Greg may take this a myriad of different waysâŠ. Perhaps he will make the furniture âcollector piecesâ and the duo will get oodles of cash. Perhaps with whatever cash they do obtain, we will see Les pick out equally hideous âman-ieâ furniture (I keep thinking some of the mirrored leather and cheetah printed stuff from the 70s.). Or perhaps the duo will find some reasonable stuff, but Irma will be devastated about the loss when she returns.
I was trying to be fairâkept thinking everyone immediately accused Gunther of caving to Knox before the strip indicated that. But yesâthis makes Gunther look pretty bad. I can figure out: you donât use a yard sale to sell âVictorianâ furniture unless you want idiots demanding to pay one cent for the entire lot (for each piece if they have some class). And idiots like Knox who would immediately accept that.
Les is not expecting to get much money for the entire lot of furniture. I wonder how he expects to pay for the new stuff to fill an entire guest houseâŠ
They need to put prices on all the items for sale. No one wants to guess at the prices at a yard sale. Most people will leave without buying anything or asking the prices. The few people who do ask will offer extremely low prices.
Wait, so Les will get to keep proceeds from the sale of Guntherâs motherâs furniture? And is corrupting Gunther in the process. OTOH I donât feel any sympathy for the Mom putting him in this situation.
@Kenhense: No, thatâs not how it works. It gives a reader the ability to block the posts of particular posters so they canât see them, but others can. I try to scroll past the haters, but some days, it would just be easier to see âthis poster blockedâ, instead of having to keep scrollingâŠ
@Squoop: Iâm not sure which âsituationâ you are saying Irma Berger put her son in. If you mean she shouldnât have put him in the situation of having to fight Les to keep their old furniture, he started out saying he didnât want it. There are those who will argue that his mother âguiltedâ him into accepting it because she was crying over it, but then again, he may have realized that he didnât have enough money to buy lamps and things right then, so he figured heâd take it until he had a better way to get furniture. And his acceptance of Lesâs idea to sell quickly was his acceptance; his mother didnât make him do that. When Irma returns from her honeymoon, itâs likely that her old furniture will not be the first thing she is thinking of!
As far as Irma being the reason why heâs living in that guest house; I still say that if he really wanted a better situation, he could use his computer smarts to get a job and move into an apartment. Since his mother had encouraged him to go to Peru, I donât see that she would have a big objection to him living in an apartment in the same town she lives in. Itâs funny how people are eager to blame 6 year old Shannon for not behaving well, even though Shannon has a less than great homelife due to her father always leaving for auditions and dumping her on Toni and Brad. But Gunther, who is older, is never responsible for his actions; itâs always his motherâs fault. My late Mom was widowed young and raised me and my bro alone till she remarried. It wasnât always perfect, but watching all this âblame Irma for everythingâ stuff turns my stomachâŠ
Gunther is right about doing some research. Some of this may have been handed down to his mom as she obviously didnât have much money being a widow. Some of the furniture could actually be antiques. An hour of research could make them a lot of money. Also, as a courtesy to his mom, he should text her at least about doing this. She gave it to Gunther to use, not to sell, and she may have some info about the furnitureâs history. I donât think itâs bad that Gunther sells it for more modern stuff, but he should take a bit of time before doing it. A day wonât kill them.
Iâve just been through a flood, and I think that altogether combined, all my molded, âwater-warpedâ albums, comics, warped and wet DVDs, Vid-Games, ruined power cords, and assorted furnitureâŠ.not to mention an old bubblegum wrapper laying under a pile of junk that I was going to throw away anyway, probably _still_comes closer to Lesâ thoughts on the actual total depreciated retail value of Ma BergerâŠ.uh, I mean Ma Greyâs old furnishingsâŠ. Than GuntherâsâŠ..
Perhaps thereâll be some sort of irony sprouting up, in the difference between Annâs âcharming but dishonestâ boutique selling tactic, and Lesâ âHurry up, man!â back-of-a-van-in-a-dark-alleyâ approach.
Yard sales are fun as a âgoerâ but as a seller yâknow, if you have the Klopman Diamond (famous comedy trope) for $10, yâgotta deal with the jokers that want it for a dime.
My old boss and his wife had a lamp exactly like that. They purchased it in the early 1980âs at Gemco for about $40. Someone above mentioned that it was âArt Decoâ. Not even. More like âearly inlawââŠ
Hereâs a thought. Offer Ann Eiffel a piece of the action and let the professional con job artist auction the furniture. Sheâll convince everyone that it once was a part of Downton Abbey, or Al Caponeâs safe house.
