I had hoped that shaving that stuff off his face would turn mean Gunther back into nice Gunther, but that “dessert” crack at Tiffany’s weight is inexcusably rude.
This time, Gunther’s this way, because he let Les get into his head, with all that bragadocious ‘swagger’ talk.
-
Funny thing, though, Les started on this whole thing, because he let Pru sneak a thought into his head, about taking the time now to pursue Tiff, against his initial “better” judgment, to hold off and let Tiff sort out her plate.
-
Well, either way, Tiffany is going to be cleaning her plate, and yet her plate will still be full- of a couple of “Yams and Meatballs”.
Petulant, passive-aggressive, judgmental slut-shaming isn’t exactly the kind of behavior that girls find endearing, Gunther. You bragged to Les that you were Tiffany’s friend since childhood, right? Maybe you should start acting like it.
Tiffany would be well-served by simply setting her plate down and leaving. No reason she should feel obligated to justify herself to this guy. After all, he won’t even nut up and talk to her about it directly: he’d rather make snide remarks. So why even bother? Personally, when someone is annoying me by being coy instead of telling me what’s bothering them, I play dumb. I pretend to not even know what they’re hinting at and instead take them literally. Either they eventually drop the charade and say what they mean, or they go absolutely bonkers out of frustration. Either way is a win in my book.
….and, to think, he left behind a girl (Rosa) that knew he’s not a suave and continental sort of fellow… but still “liked him, liked him”, anyway. And one that he didn’t have to wrack his brain, trying to find out, either.
-
And then, he didn’t even stop Irma and Al from getting together, which is what he said he wanted to come back to the States, to do, when he left Rosa in Peru.
It seems to me that a people (here and in the comic) can’t conceive of the idea that maybe Tiffany looks on both of them as “just friends”. And she tried to accommodate both requests from friends when they came in.
Tiff’s “you must wonder why” opening still makes me feel like she’s got some kind of agenda for Les and Gunther beyond any kind of romantic interest. There will most certainly be further developments ahead.
Gunther – If Tiffany can’t say what’s on her mind, what are you going to do during this 109 minutes? Gunther should hear her out and then decide if Tiffany is worth his time any more.
I already like how the date started. And putting that patch on Gunther’s cheek is a brilliant graphic idea, it looks like a tear! I hope Tiffany knows how to regain Gunther’s trust.
Tiffany is being drawn differently both yesterday and today. She’s always drawn heavily lidded, to indicate someone trying to be sexy. Now she has a much more open, guileless expression. These aren’t dates, and she isn’t trying to attract Gunther and Les. The Evans’s are very good at drawing subtle changes in facial expression.
He’s about to blow it with her, she doesn’t seem to be much interested in Less. She’s acting very mature here, she acts that way around Gunth. If he only did the same thing around her.
Several adjectives have been used above in regards to Gunther. However the defining aspect of GnK’s Gunther in the recent arcs is petulant. Gunther is now portrayed as an immature, petulant child. And repeating myself from a previous comment above, the two-hour limit for dinner was Les’ invention.
I began reading Luann because it was a witty look at life from the perspective of a child in high school. These new arcs using the same characters as young adults is no longer witty and many of the arcs are quite tiresome.
Tiffany is renowned for being both adept and fluent in the social graces. When they first moved in to the dorms at Moony, Tiffany was able to whip up a gathering, in no time! She knows how to give out the proper invites (per her one spontaneous weekend with Bernice, because of “crashing Piro”, during freshman year). And, she can spout off about culture, and “continental” things, and prides herself on being able to recognize class, taste and style (cough! fake lingire!). Surely Tiffany can be described as not just some “social butterfly”, but also a “social genius” (though she’s misused it in juvenile ways, in Junior High). She even consistently says “please” and “thank you”, without missing a beat.
-
So could it really be just some sort of oversight, or even carelessness on her part, to have accepted these two invites in this way? It seems that she has a specific tack in mind, that these two guys could have unwittingly played into. Good or bad? Or even if at all? Well, guess we’ll see, in time.
That’s it—I don’t like Gunther anymore. His famed niceness is obviously an inch deep. He’s capable of being needlessly rude to women if things haven’t gone exactly his way, even if said women have nothing to do with it. His behavior here is offensive.
Tiffany’s remark “you must wonder why I booked dessert with Les”…I immediately guessed what she’s planning. It’s “business”: she wants to discuss further efforts to get Eiffel away from her father. She certainly didn’t come to encourage Knox’s sleazy intentions.
WOW lots of reaction here. The current Supreme Court battle, and the #metoo movement, and the Fall midterms might all be weighing on people. Boy could I “weigh in” on these issues, but I am going to focus on Luann and this arc, and the current panel on it’s own. Plenty there to mull over. To me I think a set up might be where Tiffany wants to tell Gunther she really feels something for him in particular, but she at the same time wants to nicely tell Les that she only looks at him as a friend. Gunther should calm down, in any event, so he gets a chance to hear what she obviously wants to tell him, whatever the message happens to be.
Oh, come on People! Gunther’s feelings are hurt. Well your feelings can’t be hurt unless you have feelings. Inviting someone over for dinner is a little more than an invite to “just hang out.” Tiff should know that the Les invite acceptance is at least a slight. (“After two hours I’ll be gone.”)
Well there’s plenty more to come so let’s just chill!
From yesterday: We know Tiffany has a plan. “I’m actually here for Gunther.” “I was hoping this would work.” The plan will hurt someone’s feelings. “Glad it’s not too awkward.” Plus her body language indicates she’s not in a comfort zone. This could go one of two of ways.
Tiff set up tonight to friend zone Les at 8 o’clock after telling Gunther she has feelings for him beyond salamander pheromones. [Odds 60-40]
Tiff spends two hours with Gunther hoping to let him down easy and that they can remain friends. But she wants to explore her feelings for Les at 8 o’clock. [Odds Even money]
If she wanted to friend zone both, Greg would have her meeting with them together (IMHO). Any other scenario I can foresee would leave the two in friend zone by default and spin off into some other Luannverse. Such as:
- Tiff is leaving the city, state, country to pursue… a career… or Elwood… or Ritchie Rich… or Rosa… or… [Odds you pick ’em]
- Tiff wants to time-share with each of them… or both… or their Gulag… [Odds I’ll pass]
-Tiff is there to announce her father’s impending wedding to her arch-rival Ann Eyeful. [Odds 20-80, too early for another wedding arc]
At the risk of offending some! I can understand Gunther’s pique here. He feels disrespected. After he has shown Tiffany nothing but respect (along with admiration) most of their lives.
WOW!!! Gunther has a DATE with TIFFANY!!! Go Gunther!!! Who would of thought that this would EVER happen? (Yes, I’ve been following them for a long time!)
This is the first time I’ve seen Gunther stand up for himself. There are many negative statements about Gunther in these comments, but that’s only because he’s always swallowed his pride, and readers expect him to continue being a wimp. I believe we’re seeing a new Gunther—at least I hope so. He planned a lovely evening with Tiffany, including a delicious five course meal. Tiffany ruined his plans by accepting a date two hours into her date with Gunther. He is giving her feedback. This is not negativity or “blowing it with Tiffany” or lashing out. It’s feedback from a fellow human being who has feelings too. Gunther has great potential. I hope to see him fulfill much of it in the next few years. He could become a highly sought after person.
I think Tiffany is meeting Les tonight to make plans to get back at Ann. And I think Les knows that and is just giving Gunther a hard time. That is why Tiffany agreed to meet on Les’ schedule, because she wants his help getting Ann away from her dad. Les knows it is not a sex date.
They may only have 109 minutes left, but it will feel much longer to Tiffany. No woman wants to spend time with such an immature, whiny baby like Gunther. Except Irma.
For all this rivalry, it would be OK if Tiffany informed them both that as part of her therapy, she has decided to not date for the next year. Naturally, as a friend, she hopes that each of them understands.
If the situation was reversed and a guy scheduled a date with 2 female roommates AND put a time limit on the first date, women would be tearing the man a new a$$hole. The problem is the time limit. Gunther sure as hell don’t want to be thinking about Les during his date. And people are mad Gunther is pissed about it? Please. Gunther has every right to be pissed. Tiffany better have a damn good reason.
In this one, Gunther displays the behaviors of too many self-described “nice guys” Getting very angry and bitter when they don’t have all the attention they want from the girl. He’s been pissy since he learned Tiffany had made plans with Les as well as him.
