Huh. Do kids still skateboard? I thought they were all turning their minds to mush playing video games ;) . . .If a kid’s playing outside, I’d give him/her all kinds of room. . .

I am reminded of the 1932 movie, “If I Had a Million,” in which a dying millionaire gives away his money to random recipients — the WC Fields episode in which he uses his million to get bad drivers off the road.

I don’t see many kids skateboarding on the city streets, but there are loads of them in our parks, where they have all sorts of ramps and challenges built especially for them. Our city even has a large BMX course, for those cyclists who like the jumps and bumps.

I have no objection to kids skateboarding. However, like everything else, there is a time and place for it. On a public sidewalk, in a parking lot that is in use, or on the city street is neither the place or time. The same is true of the electric scooters. Both should be restricted to bike lanes or skate parks or private property, with stiff fines for violations.

Speaking of which (bike lanes), who told bikers that it’s OK for them to violate traffic laws? I drive often in downtown Minneapolis. Bike riders there routinely come to a red light and just keep on going, expecting drivers of even the biggest vehicles to see them and stop for them. What is with that? Other than stupidity, of course. But I guess the most insistent of them get Darwinized. It’s sad, though. Ruins several peoples’ lives. Then too, there’s the bikers who ride up on the sidewalks to go around stalled traffic … and not careful of people stepping out of business doors. They go full speed on the sidewalks, depending on it that no one will catch them.

As for motorcyclists, most in our area (Spring Lake Park) keep the revs down and have decent mufflers. However, we have several main streets that are frequented by riders from other adjacent towns, and those most often exhibit the “Look at ME!” complex of redlining their engines and removing whatever stock muffler was on their bike when they bought it. Many drive-through pick-’em-up truck drivers do the same. Personally, I think there should be a Federal law that (a) requires ALL internal combustion engines to be muffled to a national maximum loudness, and that carries severe penalties (like permanent impounding and recycling) of the vehicles and equipment being used by scoff-laws. It should grant a 1-year grace period to all engines manufactured before the date the restriction becomes law, but that year is to allow the owners time to meet the noise limitation requirement.
