Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for May 21, 2015
Transcript:
Pig: Hey, Steph, what's the hardest part about doing a comic strip? Pastis: Lack of space, especially for dialogue. Rat: Hey, guys, did you hear zebra inhaled some very fine particles from a volcano? He now has pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. Pastis: Must you use the longest word in the dictionary? Pig: Oh, no.. Not pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis! Rat: Yeah... pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis!

I thought the longest word in the dictionary was supercalafragalisticexpealadoscious.
arye uygur almost 10 years ago
@Proginoskes – Which panel or panels would Pastis put that word in?
knight1192a almost 10 years ago
Is that really a word or, as I suspect, did you just type a bunch of nonsense and call it a long word?
Alida_L almost 10 years ago
I only come here for the comments!

Thanks for giving him ideas.

Hey, Cartoon-Boy! Get out of the way of the dialogue-balloons! You’re barely leaving Rat and Pig enough room in panel 3 to say pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis twice, you space hog!
eddie6192 almost 10 years ago
There’s plenty of space between Toon Boy’s ears.
DocNero almost 10 years ago
Sorry I didn’t quite get that. Could you repeat that again.

Out of curiosity how long did it take you to type that?! I copied it over to Word & it has 65,481 characters and 15 pages!!

Life was a lot easier when SMILES (a mile between the first and last letters) was the longest word in English!

You know what they ask in spelling bees: “Can you use that in a sentence, please?”
the lost wizard almost 10 years ago
They really should have a word limit (individual spelling length or total comment).

When I was in Elementary School in the 60’s, Scholastic Books had a program to sell paperbacks in the classroom. One book on words I got his this one in it, and I can still rattle it off at a moments notice. Thanks!! Have a great day!!

This is nothing new. 1600 years ago, Aristophanes wrote a play in which he created “λοπαδοτεμαχοσελαχογαλεοκρανιολειψανοδριμυποτριμματοσιλφιοκαραβομελιτοκατακεχυμενοκιχλεπικοσσυφοφαττοπεριστεραλεκτρυονοπτοκεφαλλιοκιγκλοπελειολαγῳοσιραιοβαφητραγανοπτερύγων”He was poking fun at stringing words together to create, obviously, long words.

Actually, the longest word in the English language is “smiles.” Because there’s a mile between each “s.”
DeltaMikeUno almost 10 years ago
The longest non-technical word… Floccinaucinihilipilification: act or habit of describing or regarding something as unimportant or worthless… which is what Rat often does concerning Stephan.
Machtyn almost 10 years ago
At least floccinaucinihilipilification has a lot of thin letters to it.
David Bethke Premium Member almost 10 years ago
I think it’s spelled Johann Gambolputty… de von Ausfern-schplenden-schlitter-crasscrenbon-fried-digger-dingle-dangle- dongle-dungle-burstein-von-knacker-thrasher-apple-banger-horowitz- ticolensic-grander-knotty-spelltinkle-grandlich-grumblemeyer- spelterwasser-kurstlich-himbleeisen-bahnwagen-gutenabend-bitte-ein- nurnburger-bratwustle-gernspurten-mitz-weimache-luber-hundsfut- gumberaber-shonedanker-kalbsfleisch-mittler-aucher von Hautkopft of Ulm.

John W Kennedy Premium Member almost 10 years ago
“Pneumo…osis” is fake, though often used as an example of a long word, and it’s a mash-up of Greek, Latin, and English bits in a way that isn’t even legit. Even “antidisestablishmentarianism” isn’t genuine, though “disestablishmentarianism” is, so that “antidisestablishmentarianism” is theoretically sound.

From what I’m finding it looks like this is not a real word, but here’s a site that has a recording of how to pronounce it. I can’t seem to get it to show up as a link, though!

Stephan, I realize politics is an important part of your profession, but I think you can win the Reuben without having to pander to the powerful Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolanoconiosis Prevention Foundation. What did you do—promise to underwrite a lifetime supply of four-angstrom facemasks for the residents around Mount St. Helen’s?

Sorry, I’d meant to reply to Proginoskes extremely long word and either my @Proginoskes was deleted when their post was deleted (though not the rest of my post) or I replied in the comment box instead. Considering I’ve seen other instances where someone has replied to a post that is missing and their response includes the link to the other user, as mine does with yours and yours with mine, I have very little doubt I screwed up and replied in the comment box instead of the reply box.

By the way, just trying to sound out some of the words in these comments is making me laugh out loud.

My favourite long word is floccinaucinihilipilification.I’ve actually used it a couple of times. The best way is to use it as a rebuttal to someone who accuses me of knowing nothing.
