The cemetery where I serve as a guide has so many groundhogs that we guides are required to warn visitors about them at the start of each tour. The typical warning is; “The groundhogs make holes roughly the size of an adult human foot”. That gets peoples’ attention. And helps keep them safe.
A gopher is a mean vicious creature. Friends of mine had a cat that could catch and kill them. She had litters of kittens that she would teach that skill. It as always a show when she would catch and bring a live gopher over the fence for teaching purposes and turn it loose. The dog would get curious. The gopher would be after the dog in just a few minutes. It would chase the dog, gnashing and lunging around the yard. That was hilarious. Then mama kitty would sit and watch with her kittens, then she would walk over and pick it up. :-D You could almost hear her telling her kittens, “You see, children, how it behaves? This is the correct technique. Now you learn to do it the right way.” The dog was like “ I’ll be darned. How did she DO that?” ;-D
Sadly, there are people who would be so cruel to animals that dare inconvenience them with their mere existence. As if our lawns were the most important thing going. As if humans are the only species that matter.
One of my security cameras picks up a groundhog family in the wee hours. Last night It caught sandhill cranes walking across my lawn and driveway … but, thankfully, very quietly.

Getting Guard Duck to help would be the most efficient solution, but Larry would be funnier.

Had outside cats and would get groundhogs due to the woods behind the house. The cats left the groundhogs alone. A good idea.

A gopher that size would overpower them easily.

That’s a big gopher. Ask him what he wants, give it to him, and maybe he’ll go away.
