A builder I knew built his tub into the floor. He built it with steps. Wasn’t a Jacuzzi, just a small indoor tub. We have a tub. Major effort to not slip getting in or out at pur age so it’s rarely used. I put grab bars everywhere in the bathroom but no thought about the tub. I need a robot….
A few years ago we started watching Midsomer Murders on BBC America and a several of the recurring commercials were for walk-in tubs. One of the brands was Kohler, but I don’t remember the others. Long commercials, showing someone walking up to a shower cubicle that was actually a tub with 32" sides, opening a door, and sitting down. Bubbles rising, person looking happy and warm. Voiceover sounded confident, reassuring, and provided a lot of details — but he didn’t mention how long you would be sitting there waiting for the tub to drain so you could open the door and reach for the towel.
I found both this comic and today’s Farcus to be decidedly unfunny. Neither topic should be the subject of poorly attempted humor. I am “of a certain age” where I am overweight, and have mild tingling numbness in my feet. If I am on the floor, willingly or not, I struggle to get up. I started to repaint a room last week, and decided I had no business being on a ladder or being on the floor to cut in above the baseboards. I hired a pro to finish up.
I was just discussing that with my wife recently, I haven’t soaked in a tub in many years, only showers. She told me not to try it while she was away. I “chickened” out. And btw, OIB is our favorite vacation spot, we go a couple of times a year.
“Pluggers are stuck in the bathtub and probably they’re going to die there” is frankly a little too grim for me this morning! Please go back to being smug about your exurban folkways, Pluggers, I much prefer that to seeing the chicken-lady’s last bubbly moments!
Get handrails installed, that will help. Turn over to face down before trying to get up (don’t drown), those back muscles tend to be stronger than stomach muscles. Showers aren’t so bad.
Last time I can remember I was in a tub was in the 1950’s. Parents moved into a house with a shower and never a tub again. I’m 84 and have a walk-in shower stall.
I now know how to get out of this predicament, but it’s not easy and it takes time. It was about a year or so ago that I was standing at the bathroom sink, slipped, and fell backwards into the tub.

The main reason I switched to showers.

It’s embarrassing. Have an effective exit strategy before getting in the tub.

Have your cell phone handy before you get in. If necessary, call the paramedics and ask for a crane.

With the price of water, can’t afford to fill the tub so go with a shower. Only puuts two inches of water down or about ten – fifteen gallons.

I’ve found that a hot shower (or bath) limbers me up. But, If I ever get stuck in the tub, you can bet I will get out one way or another.

For some it’s more like (if you can keep it warm) that you don’t (ever) want to get out.
