Lady Godiva, riding nude through Coventry to distract the peasants from their oppressive taxes.

Because if the government is going to tax you blind, the last thing you see might as well be a peep show.

It’s really hard to make a woman appear modest and demure when she is riding in the buff, but John Collier gave it his best shot.

End result – Lady Godiva looks like a moody teen instead of a strong woman making a statement.

So he tried to contrive a

test for Lady Godiva

to which he thought she’d never agree.

Lady Godiva’s stunt got her husband to lower the taxes. But for some reason, the peasants started asking for more tax hikes.

When your horse is better dressed than you, you should hang your head…

The Lady did not think

That her nether parts

would rest amid the stink

of where her husband loosed his farts

The peasants were grateful (they say)/

When she rode through town naked that day:

she attracted a crowd/

For she was well endowed/

But did the horse like it ? Neigh.

Spirited steed whilst the damsel had pee’d.

The imaginative Jude, stuck for a costume finally turns up at the annual fancy dress party.

There was a young lady called Jude,

Who rode on a horse in the nude.

The menfolk all swore,

That the girl was a h0re,

But made sure that they got a good view!

Millie’s slight misunderstanding of riding bareaback

Before the invention of cell phones, the process of sending nudes was far less covert.

Lady Godiva set off on her mare

She was bare, ‘cept for her long blond hair

People were warned to not take looks

Out their doorways and window nooks

(It was for a good cause

Protesting unfair taxing laws)

But — Jeepers Creepers! —

Voyeur Tom placed his peepers

Against a knot hole in the wall

Which he should not have done at all

His gaping mouth dripped saliva

At the sight of naked Godiva

But suddenly he saw no more hence

Struck blind for his rude offense

.

From then on he bore the scorn

Of the town where he was born

People shouted out insults

And he daily suffered the results

.

Peeping Tom: For him there is no weeping

For the townsfolk are now keeping

What before they in taxes overpaid

Now saved due to Godiva’s nude parade

Wouldn’t Lady Godiva have ridden side-saddle?

She’s back in the saddle again

Oooh I like that! And it will also keep me from sliding off the saddle

Once she looked down, it finally clicked, she understood what was meant by “the carpet matches the drapes”

I always thought she rode her horse bare back!

Lady Godiva rode sidesaddle, leading to the invention of the phrase: Hooray for OUR SIDE!

Getting that saddle horn positioned just right took practice.

“Wait a minute — How did Catherine the Great ride her horse..?.”

Godiva, you don’t need to find the shift pedal on these new EV bikes.

She wasn’t truly naked. She wore a pained expression and a layer of goose pimples.

the phrase “hooray for our side” originated because the lady rode side saddle

Well at least the horse is keeping warm.

By chance, I just re-read “The Seven Lady Godivas”, the little-known Dr. Seuss 1939 classic re-issued in 1987, yesterday. While the artwork is a tad less restrained than Mr. Collier’s depiction, the story does provide some clarification regarding the tale and the role of the horse in linking each Godiva with her Peeping.

Some sources say that Her Ladyship took her ride wearing just a muslin shift, unadorned by jewellery or clothing befitting her station and this was considered “naked” for the time. Seeing as her ride was to have taken place about 1000 years ago, do we really know?
