This is another of my favourite Sunday strips. I have referred to it several times. It makes two big points which support Bill Watterson’s claim that he didn’t see Hobbes as part of Calvin’s imagination. One of them is that Hobbes is shown again as able to do something Calvin didn’t know about. Another is that the forest animals seem to be able to see Hobbes is alive just as Calvin does.
My cousin always has several dogs on her farm. She is an excellent dog trainer. The first thing she teaches her dogs is that the chickens are there to be protected, not eaten. They do a good job getting after rats and other vermin that harm chickens and steal eggs.
What the dogs do on their own is their own business. They sometimes come back from their romps in the woods and then have what we call “bunny farts” – there is hair in there.
Okay, I took my kids and wife Christmas tree cutting in the Idaho woods one year. 6 inches of snow. I pointed out bird tracks, yes there were rabbit tracks too. Then there were these bigger tracks, not deer—too big— then we came across a big steaming pile of scat, freshly dumped. Mountain Lion I cried, and loaded everyone up into the VW van. I cut a six foot tree along the small road and jammed it inside the VW rear hatchback with us and drove off. True story.
Since these cartoons are all reruns, they could have been taken from anywhere along the original C&H time stream, but I’m glad they’re doing their best to match the seasons.
Thank you, Calvin. I have never realized I could look for “wing impressions where they took off”. No seriously. It’s good to know that, at my age, I can still learn something – even from a comic strip.

How did Hobbes get out of the house? Do Mom and Dad leave the doors unlocked at night?

Hobbes is just following natures rules. The law of the back woods, so to speak……

My husband remarked “Just remove the word wet and it explains your cold feet at night.”

Cartoon physics are amazing! The snow fell and his foot prints remained.

Hobbes, the “ferocious killer”, don’t think he’d touch a feather on a bird or a hair on a hare.

Hobbes is Cal’s mind wrapped in a fuzzy coat.

You don’t need a pet tiger to get cold, wet feet in the bed.

As Mr. Game Warden told Elmer, it was baseball season. Well, football, basketball, hockey, volleyball season right now.
