As I said on Monday, this story certainly reminds me of myself as a kid when I made a hole in a cardboard box. This story arc was not as interesting as some Calvin and Hobbes arcs have been but it was funny, it made some good points which are still very relevant to modern society and it reminded me of childhood fun.
My personal favourites include the wedding-burglary arc which was reprinted earlier this year, the two duplicator arcs and the Snow Goons arc which reminded me of Stephen King’s The Shining.
I like how Calvin and Hobbes were able to keep the flow of the conversation going after they teleported up to the branch of the tree they ended up sitting on…
That is the reason I don’t watch TV anymore. All the shows feature father-figures who are portrayed as dumb, useless idiots. This leads to a degradation of real-life families and particularly the parents. We need shows that have the father as the backbone of the family, and accepts his role willingly. Yes, I know C & H is a comic strip, but the issue is too real. I loved and respected my father, ‘warts and all.’ I hope my children have the same respect for me.
Sorry, Calvin but way before this strip was drawn sitcoms mined that very same theme. It’s why the late Bob Newhart never wanted his character of Dr Bob Hartley to ever have kids with his wife played by Suzanne Pleshette. In an interview he said, “I told the creators I didn’t want any children, because I didn’t want it to be a show about ‘How stupid Daddy is, but we love him so much, let’s get him out of the trouble he’s gotten himself into’.”

Just curious: has Calvin EVER been spanked for his many misdeeds, or is corporal punishment now banned?
tremaine53 about 1 month ago
Unfortunately for Calvin, his dad is not a Zilch Knower.

I guess all of those who chanted “Never Trust Anyone Over Thirty?” just grew up.

If this strip was being produced in current time, wonder Dad would even both with tv.

Hallmark would take it.

In most occasions, the dad has a reason to punish Calvin.
Here, he’s just insulting him for playing.

Good for Calvin’s dad, that’s a pretty clever line.

Dad and mom know pretty well how to make the kid to spend his quality time. Dumb tv is a far away experience as compared to the tree top rendezvous.

It is just the two of us and we have 4 tvs in the house. Someday one TV seems like too many.

Be done – waaaaaaaay too many times, presumably by producers who are clueless fathers. :)

Dads know more about TVs than they do about raising kids because TVs come with instruction manuals.

Heh, “Father Knows Zilch” would be pretty funny! Like a TV adaptation of the comic strip “Dopey Dad.”

When I was Calvin’s age I began to notice that some grownups weren’t very smart. Because of the authority thing I avoided rubbing their noses in it.

I think the last time I had only one TV where I was living was around 1968.
